Retired Marine Col. George Markert, who is now the GOP nominee for Colorado lieutenant governor, brought up his own daughter’s case as part of the crime debate in his state while making an appearance on Fox News’ My View with Lara Trump, going on to describe the night she was sexually assaulted and what happened afterward as the motivation for his decision to jump into politics.
Speaking with Trump, Markert opened up by sharing that the desire to be tough on crime comes from how his daughter was victimized and the failure of the justice system to ensure her attacker paid for his crime. “And I’m telling you personally, we’ve had to experience it. My daughter was sexually assaulted last year, broad daylight. It was a 45-minute delay for the first responding officer after 9-1-1. I’m not blaming the police department,” he told Trump.
Markert said the blame for the situation rests solely on the shoulders of Colorado’s top cop, Phil Weiser. “It’s a condition set by the top cop, which is Phil Weiser. He is horrible at his job protecting Coloradans. That incident with my daughter, I never forget. The officer said, looking at it, he goes, ‘We know who he is. We just can’t catch him,'” Markert said.
“And there’s a whole situation behind it, where it kind of went on for a bit. But he faced prosecution, and the prosecutor said he’ll be out in 36 months doing the same thing. All of this falls at the feet of Phil Weiser and his lack of leadership to do his job as attorney general to support law enforcement to give them the tools to,” the Republican nominee said.
Markert is currently running for the position alongside fellow Marine veteran Victor Marx, who is the Republican Party nominee for governor. Together, they are going head-to-head with Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, who is the Democratic nominee for governor after spending eight years serving as the state’s top prosecutor.
Both Marx and Markert are first-time candidates running an all-veteran ticket against the ever leftward-drifting politics of Colorado. During the interview with Trump, both candidates took an opportunity to put the Democratic Socialists of America on blast for their grip on the state legislature, warning socialist ideology that is spreading like wildfire through Colorado, would lead to anarchy and economic collapse, which they both witnessed overseas.
“It’s just one of many reasons Victor decided to run for Governor. Also, his daughter was one of that offender’s victims. There was 12 other women. 36 months is not enough for what he did,” an X user commented on a post featuring a clip from the interview. Markert has stated that he wants to be involved in politics to make positive changes to the state.

When asked about the issues he would like to tackle at the state level in an interview with The Colorado Sun, he replied, “It really falls into three primary areas. It’s affordability, first and foremost. No. 2 is safety — public safety and fighting crime and lawlessness. And then lastly is government transparency and accountability.”
