    WATCH: Trump Shares Hilarious Story about Melania and the Trump Dance…Then Does the Dance Yet Again

    President Donald Trump drew laughs from a South Carolina crowd when he revealed that First Lady Melania Trump remains unimpressed by some of his most recognizable onstage routines. Trump said his wife particularly dislikes watching him dance to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.,” which he jokingly called the “gay national anthem.” Her criticism did not stop the president from performing the dance once again moments later.

    His comments came during an August 21st rally at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in support of Republican Senator Darline Graham. Graham was campaigning ahead of South Carolina’s Republican special primary runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman. Trump used the appearance to promote Graham and defend his administration’s record while moving through an assortment of policy arguments, campaign stories, and even some humorous impressions.

    Trump’s story about Melania began while he was criticizing transgender medical procedures involving children and men competing in women’s sports. He demonstrated what he called his “swimming routine” and “weightlifting routine,” then acknowledged that the first lady does not approve of either impression. According to Trump, Melania considers the performances below the behavior normally expected of a president.

    “My wife hates when I do that. She says, ‘It’s so unpresidential, darling,’” Trump explained. He defended the routines by reminding her that he’d won the presidency. “I said, ‘I won in a landslide.’ No, she said she doesn’t like when I do the swimming routine or the weightlifting routine. I said, ‘Darling, I won in a landslide. It’s okay.’”

    Trump turned to the dance that has become a regular feature of his rallies. “And she hates when I dance to that great, to the gay national anthem. That’s what it is. It’s called the gay national anthem,” he told the crowd. “You know, I got the highest gay vote in the history of politics for a Republican, and, and I played the gay national anthem. So, you know, what can I say? I’ll take it. We’re gonna take it. We got the highest of everything.”

    Trump disregarded Melania’s advice and performed the routine once again. He swayed from side to side and moved his arms in the familiar dance that supporters have watched at campaign events for years and have lovingly come to call “The Trump Dance.” His brief performance drew another loud and lively response from the Myrtle Beach audience.

    Trump has told similar stories about Melania’s reaction to his performances during previous appearances. Speaking to Republican lawmakers in Washington in January, he said the first lady had described his dancing as “so unpresidential,” according to Reuters. Trump responded, “But I did become president,” before reporting that Melania had asked him, “Could you imagine FDR dancing?” He still performed a brief dance before leaving the stage at the end of that speech.

    Melania had previously explained that her objection depended on the setting rather than the dance itself. During a January appearance on Fox News’ “The Five,” the first lady acknowledged that she had performed her own version and said she had also spoken directly to her husband about when he should avoid it. “I like it at certain times,” she said. “Some days was not appropriate and I told him so.”
