Rumors have been swirling about changes to the ‘Yellowstone’ cast in 2023. With Kevin Costner reportedly at odds with director Taylor Sheridan, reporters everywhere are asking the biggest names in acting how they would feel about appearing on the hit western. The most recent in this saga is Keanu Reeves, who spoke to ET Canada about his interest in being in a show like ‘Yellowstone.’
Reeves, who stars in the ‘John Wick’ series, also was the star of the iconic ‘Matrix’ universe and ‘Point Break.’ when asked how he might feel about a surprise cameo on a show “like Yellowstone,” Reeves said this as shared by the Daily Caller:
“I’d love to do a western! So yeah! Sure.”
As a fan of the show, I hope the higher-ups at Paramount are reading this and immediately getting Reeves on the line. Following the news from insiders that indicated ‘Yellowstone’ may be on its last legs due to a conflict between Sheridan and Costner, a new star will need to be found to lead in what would likely be another successful spinoff of the Dutton Family Ranch.
Paramount is reportedly also in talks to bring Matthew McConaughey on board to take the acting reigns of the franchise. Following a proposed change to the scheduling of the show, Deadline reported on the situation, writing this:
“We are told Paramount Network has declined Costner’s most recent proposal and instead has made the decision to move on to the other show, sources said.
“What all parties are now wrangling is a Yellowstone franchise extension that Sheridan will write with McConaughey as the star. The True Detective star is currently in negotiations.”
Another report was released a few days later by Puck, which said that there had been instances of in-fighting between the Costner camp and executives at Paramount. Allegedly, this spilled over into insults being thrown on social media, although those posts have since been deleted. Puck wrote:
“Costner tried noting Sheridan during the first couple seasons of Yellowstone, which I’m told didn’t go over well. And once the show became a smash hit, Costner is said to have begun squeezing. He demanded to be compensated for promotion days, say two sources, despite a contract that pays him $1.2 million per episode for the 16 episodes of this fifth season, rising to $1.5 million per episode if there is a Season 6, plus an overall deal with MTV Entertainment Studios that runs through 2025. A couple seasons ago, Costner’s WME team closed a major renegotiation, then he went back to his lead agent of ten years, Brad Slater, who had put Costner in Yellowstone in the first place, and demanded that Slater re-open the deal for additional asks.”
The final half of the current season of ‘Yellowstone’ is still yet to make its way to Paramount’s channel, and so while fans wait, they are also left to contemplate the future of the hit western and what this drama may mean for the franchise that took America by storm. As plenty of spinoffs are in the works still, this likely will not mean the end of the Yellowstone Ranch, but it may be the beginning of the end for the original core of the Dutton Family.
