WATCH: “Democratic Socialist” Zohran Mamdani’s New York City Sees High Tax, High Spend Disaster Spiral Begin

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was pelted with boos during a recent event in Staten Island on August 4, 2026, during a pro-police celebration. Mamdani gave a few short remarks at the Midland Beach boardwalk in celebration of the New York Police Department’s 43rd Patrol Borough National Night Out Against Crime. A total of 3,500 residents and families attended the event.

Mamdani’s appearance drew loud boos and jeers, along with a torrent of profanities from those in attendance as the mayor, an avowed Democratic socialist, made his way to the podium. A handful of individuals demanded that the mayor beat feet and leave the event. The whole nasty affair was captured on video that was later shared on social media.

The mayor, well known for his polished public speaking and bloated speeches, spoke at the podium for less than a minute, wishing Staten Islanders a “Happy Night Out Against Crime” before he was whisked off to the side while delivering a wide smile, showcasing his ability to play at politics even under pressure. As he was being escorted away, footage shows many in the audience flashing a “thumbs down” at the mayor as he was mocked by the crowd.

Much of the backlash was likely sparked by the fact that Mamdani’s agenda for the Big Apple is going to cost much more than he originally stated it would, as reported by Fox News. In a video clip of a report on the embarrassing fiasco from Fox, political analyst Bryan Llena explained the situation to anchor Martha MacCallum.

“Hi, Martha. Well, Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani said his agenda would cost about $10 billion a year. Turns out, it’s likely going to be more than that. Let’s start with free universal childcare. The Center for New York City Affairs estimates the cost at about up to 9.3 billion dollars a year. That’s 55% more than Mamdani said,” Llena stated in the report.

“Most of that pays for his promise of teacher-level salaries for childcare workers. Mamdani said he would raise $10 billion a year, mostly through new taxes on corporations and millionaires. So far, he’s projected to raise just about a billion dollars a year from a new Pied-à-Terre tax and state aid. The problem is only the state can levy new taxes, and Governor Kathy Hochul has said no,” he continued.

“Well, sort of. She recently said yes to a new Pied-à-Terre tax on second homes in the city. Hochul defended that tax this afternoon,” Llena added. Fox then played a clip of Hochul saying, “What I do support is saying that those who are able to afford a second home worth over $5 million, but do not make New York City your home, you’re benefiting from police and fire protective services, and are maintaining our roads and during snowstorms and in the summer. So why aren’t you contributing to this?”

“So I’m asking people to pay their fair share,” the governor said. Cutting back to Llena, the political analyst then said, “The question is, how much more does the city really need? New York City’s annual budget is already 126 billion dollars, bigger than the budgets of 46 states, eight times bigger than LA’s budget, and yet the city, Martha, is staring at a $7 billion deficit next year.”
