A huge scandal has been rocking the Democratic Party in recent weeks, concerning new data released by the Department of Homeland Security that reveals an obscenely large number of noncitizens are registered to vote and some of them have cast ballots in previous elections. The Justice Department announced it was launching an investigation into software errors that registered a whopping 6,600 noncitizens to vote in New Jersey alone.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill admitted that as many as 400 of those noncitizens actually cast a ballot in state elections. And that’s just the Garden State. Democrats have been scrambling to address the issue or do damage control by spinning the narrative to make the number of these noncitizens appear smaller than it is.
One such individual is Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) who addressed the situation during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” Kaine tried to more or less shrug off the matter by blaming the whole thing on a “computer glitch.” Kaine said, “[T]his was a very unfortunate glitch. Importantly, it wasn’t that individuals were trying to vote illegally.”
“There was a computer glitch that, when they registered for driver’s licenses and said they were non-citizens, the glitch got them mistakenly classified as citizens and registered them to vote,” Kaine said to Shannon Bream. The Virginia Democrat then attempted to make the case that the answer to the problem lies with individual states, not Washington, going on to point out the requirements of his state.
“I think the right answer here is voter ID laws passed at the state level,” Kaine went on to say. “Virginia has a voter ID law that’s sort of been acceptable. Whether our governors are Democrats or Republicans, it’s worked. My Virginians are not telling me we need to have a one-size-fits-all voter ID requirement for the entire nation … [T]hat’s something we can leave to state legislatures.”
Kaine isn’t the only Democrat who is trying hard not to let this situation blow up in the party’s face just a few short months out from the general election. According to a report from The Daily Caller, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is launching attacks against President Donald Trump after CNN host Dana Bash confronted him over the scandal.
During an interview on “State of the Union,” Bash referred to the situation as “one of the most significant disclosures of noncitizen registration” in the country’s history. “Democrats have repeatedly said that non-citizen voting doesn’t happen. It happened. Is this a problem?” Bash asked the New York Democrat. “I think that I continue to have confidence in state and local authorities in making sure that there’s going to be a free and fair election in November,” Jeffries responded.

He added, “And, if modest or minor challenges emerge, such as the one that was disclosed voluntarily by the authorities in New Jersey, that it is immediately corrected. And that’s what I expect will continue to happen.” Jeffries then pulled the “let’s blame Trump” card. “Unfortunately, what we have seen from Donald Trump is that, in this particular case, Republicans have adopted voter suppression as an electoral strategy because they have failed to actually deliver on making life more affordable for the American people.”
