A “troubled juvenile” who has been charged with the brutal slayings of an elderly couple in Mississippi, was well-known by local law enforcement officers as a suspect in numerous other crimes. The suspect had been hired by his victims to do odd jobs around their house. Cordarius Hobbs, 17, is being charged with killing Bill Blair, 74 and his wife Carol, on June 3, 2026.
The murders came after Hobbs broke into the couple’s home, located in the small town of Mendenhall, which boasts a population of 2,200 residents. At a preliminary hearing in July, the teen’s family members confirmed that Hobbs did work for the Blairs such as house cleaning and other chores and tasks. Reporters at Fox News managed to obtain the incident report from The Simpson County Sheriff’s Department.
“When we first arrived [on the crime scene] I and other Deputies and Investigators believe the suspect could be a troubled juvenile known to us as Cordarius Hobbs who is also suspected of many other home burglaries as well as auto theft in this immediate area,” an officer’s incident report goes on to say. Hobbs’ grandfather, Billy Newsome, told police that his grandson was called to work for the elderly couple on the day of the alleged shooting, though he believes his grandson is innocent.
“My grandson used to work for the man, why you gone rob a man that you work for,” Newsome stated, according to a report from Breitbart News. “Why you gone stay there that long and you know the police out there, and then you gone wait until everybody gets there to run, it just ain’t adding up, something just ain’t right here.”
Newsome is referring to a police standoff that took place that same day after three contractors arrived on the property to install a generator. The contractors discovered a vehicle parked at the location at 10 a.m. that morning. The car’s door was open and several guns were left on the seats, an investigator with the Mississippi Bureau said.
When no one came out of the residence as they started installing the generator, the crew decided to call the sheriff for a welfare check on the couple. After arriving on the scene, officers were greeted by gunfire, which led to a two-hour standoff. Hobbs was eventually taken into custody after he tried to flee from the home and away from officers.
When he was caught, the teen was unarmed. Police then discovered the body of Carol Blair in the fetal position in a bedroom, having been shot three times in the back of the head. Her husband was found on his back on the kitchen floor, having three gunshot wounds to his face. A friend of the couple, Jason Busby, spoke with a local television news outlet calling the two individuals “selfless.”

“The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just a tragedy,” Busby told the outlet. “Everybody around here is still in shock. They were just good people.” Prosecutors have charged Hobbs as an adult with two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and two counts of aggravated assault of a person over 65.
Hobbs’ defense attorney, Zachary Vaughn, spoke with Fox News saying that his client has thus far been respectful and courteous during their meetings. Vaughn also said that there is a lack of direct forensic evidence connecting Hobbs to the couple’s murder. Hobbs is currently being held in the Rankin County jail. His request for bond and release has been denied.
