CNN host Dana Bash grilled House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on whether illegal aliens voting in elections is a “problem” in the United States, following a report that came from the Garden State that revealed thousands of illegal voters were registered and a total of 400 non-citizens had cast ballots in recent elections.
During the interview, Bash asked Jeffries if this was a major concern for him and the Democratic Party or if it was simply a one-off issue. Bash, a leftist, hinted around about how she personally feels about the situation, attempting to downplay the number of illegal voters, adding there is no proof that it altered elections. Many conservatives, who are huge proponents of law and order, believe it doesn’t matter if it impacted elections or not. Since it is illegal, it should be stopped.
“Your next door neighbor, New Jersey, just disclosed that 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly registered to vote there from 2023 to 2024. 400 of them actually voted in elections since then. It is a small number compared to the 7 million voters in New Jersey, and there’s no evidence that that swayed any election, but this is one of the most significant disclosures of non-citizen registration,” she prefaced her question.
“Democrats have repeatedly said that non-citizen voting doesn’t happen. It happened. Is this a problem?” Bash asked Jeffries. “I think that I continue to have confidence in state and local authorities in making sure that there’s going to be a free and fair election in November,” the New York Democrat went on to say in his response to Bash.
“And if modest or minor challenges emerge, such as the one that was disclosed voluntarily by the authorities in New Jersey, that it is immediately corrected, and that’s what I expect will continue to happen. Unfortunately, what we’ve seen from Donald Trump is that, in this particular case, Republicans have adopted voter suppression as an electoral strategy because they have failed to actually deliver on making life more affordable for the American people,” Jeffries replied.

As noted in a report from Mediaite, Jeffries failed to mention that New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) revealed the data about the number of illegal voters just a few days after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that an investigation uncovered nearly 250,000 non-citizens were registered to vote across four states.
Along with New Jersey, those states include California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Mullin penned a letter that was sent out to all four states demanding that they take action to fix the problem. The secretary then strongly stated that any official who did not remove illegal voters could face serious consequences, including major fines or even time behind bars.
President Donald Trump has been applying pressure to Republican lawmakers to pass the SAVE America Act, a piece of legislation that has been created to preserve election integrity. If the bill becomes law, it would require those wanting to register to vote to provide proof of valid citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Those who are registered would then be required to present photo ID at the polls before casting their ballots.
