Democratic Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan started shouting at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a heated Senate hearing, only for Hegseth to turn the senator’s accusations directly back on him. Peters repeatedly demanded that Hegseth “show leadership” while accusing the secretary of failing the service members fighting overseas. Hegseth did not back down, pointing instead to Democrats who criticize the administration while refusing to support funding for the troops.
The confrontation unfolded as Peters attempted to separate his criticism of the administration from his comments about the men and women serving on the front lines. Peters insisted that the service members were capable of winning but accused their civilian leadership of lacking both a strategy and a long-term plan. His voice rose sharply as he demanded an answer from Hegseth.
“You, sir, are the failure. Not the men and women who are on that front line, not the men and women who hold up their honor with distinction,” Peters told him. “You don’t have a strategy. You don’t have a long-term plan to actually win this war. Win the war.”
Peters then became even louder, declaring that the troops could accomplish their mission if they were given proper leadership. “The men and women are going to be able to do it, but they need to have leadership,” he shouted. “When will you show leadership? When will you show leadership?”
The exchange was posted on X by conservative commentator Eric Daugherty, who described Peters as “yelling at the top of his lungs” before Hegseth delivered what he called the “perfect response,” which can be seen here.
Hegseth immediately rejected Peters’ attack and challenged the Democrat to confront members of his own party. “Why don’t you show some leadership and stand up to your fellow Democrats who won’t fund the troops, who stand and play partisan politics while you don’t give us the money?” Hegseth fired back. Peters attempted to interrupt, but Hegseth continued speaking over him.
“You want to stand up here and talk about the troops?” Hegseth asked. “You won’t show any political courage to actually fund our department because you have Trump derangement syndrome and can’t actually commit to anything meaningful.” He then put responsibility for the funding dispute squarely on Peters, adding, “So I put this on you, Senator.”

Peters tried to regain control of the exchange by arguing that the Pentagon already had an enormous budget at its disposal. “Secretary Hegseth, you have trillions. You have over a trillion dollars,” Peters said, referring to the administration’s defense spending request. “It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of leadership and understanding what it takes to actually win.”
Hegseth remained focused on the funding fight rather than accepting Peters’ characterization of the military campaign. He accused Democrats of withholding resources from service members while using the hearing to attack the Trump administration’s leadership. As the committee chair announced that Peters’ time had expired and brought the hearing to a close, Hegseth delivered his final response: “Political cowardice of Democrats who won’t fund the troops.”
