Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent set the record straight for his critics and those who hate the Republican Party and conservatives around the country for allegedly exaggerating the dire threat left-wing political terrorism poses to the people of America while delivering remarks at the State Department’s Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism summit.
Bessent, who was himself the target of an assassination attempt by what he called an “addled left-wing activist” before he was sworn in to the office he currently occupies, reminded those attending the event that acts of extreme violence from leftists is a real and present danger to the American way of life. And he’s got a strategy for helping to dismantle radical liberal groups who could be contributing to the spike in violence.
He’s planning to strip away their tax exempt status. On January 27, 2025, Ryan English, 24, handed himself over to Capitol Police officers and confessed that he made the trip to our nation’s capital to murder a “presidential cabinet nominee” that was set to be sworn in later that same day. English said his original target was War Secretary Pete Hegseth, but changed his mind.
He was in possession of several Molotov cocktails and a folding knife. Police later confirmed that the “Cabinet nominee” he decided to target was Scott Bessent. During his speech, Bessent revealed that President Donald Trump was done playing games and ready to take swift action to dismantle radical groups and prevent them from churning out psychopathic activists.
“Under President Trump’s direction, Treasury is expanding its efforts to identify organizations that abuse charitable and nonprofit structures as vehicles for illicit finance. We are examining where tax-exempt status has been exploited, where charitable entities have become financial conduits for foreign influence activity, and how those entrusted with stewardship of these organizations have instead enabled violence,” Bessent told the crowd.
“Where the evidence leads, we will not hesitate to follow, and of course, we will hold these organizations, officers, directors accountable, and just as financial institutions must know their clients, they must know their grantees. That work is well underway,” he concluded in a clip that is being shared across social media platforms.
Bessent also stated that homegrown left-wing terrorists might be able to run for a time, but they can’t hide, saying the Trump administration is going to hit them where it hurts the most: their bank accounts. “On behalf of the United States Treasury, let there be no uncertainty about the work before us and the resolve with which we will undertake it,” he said, according to a report from RedState.

“We will identify illicit funding, however artfully it is concealed. We will dismantle the networks that sustain political terrorism, however respectable their fronts may be. We will pursue those who enable political violence, however distant their jurisdictions, and we will deepen our collaboration with every nation represented in this room for as long as this work requires,” Bessent continued. He also mentioned that as these groups are discovered, they would be designated as terrorist organizations.
