Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), along with independent journalist Nick Shirley, completely obliterated Democrats, particularly California Gov. Gavin Newsom, by exposing how they are basically working to protect Medicaid fraudsters with a new piece of legislation being referred to as the “Stop Nick Shirley Act.” Johnson spoke with Shirley during a recent Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing.
For additional context, Shirley is the one who exposed massive daycare fraud in the Somali community located in Minneapolis, Minnesota in December 2025, which resulted in billions of dollars of fraud involving federal tax dollars being uncovered. Shirley visited these centers personally and recorded his interactions with those who ran them, posting his findings on YouTube and other social media platforms.
“You mentioned the Stop Nick Shirley Act. What is that? I mean, can you describe that in greater detail?” Johnson asked Shirley during the hearing. The independent journalist started his explanation by noting that the bill was crafted by Mia Bonta, who is married to the Attorney General of California, and revealed the official title of the bill.
“Yeah. So that’s a bill that’s been created by Mia Bonta, the wife of the Attorney General of California, and the official title is AB 2624, and it’s to make it essentially illegal to expose and to film outside of immigration support service providers,” Shirley told Johnson. “That means any entity that provides services to illegal migrants, whether that be healthcare or legal fees.”
“If I were to go out and film a video in front of one of these locations, perhaps an NGO like Churla that’s received over $80 million from the government, and they gave me a piece of paper, and they say, ‘Hey, you cannot publish that video.’ If that bill passes, it’ll be illegal for me to –” Johnson interjected and roasted California Democrats.
“So it really ought to be renamed the Protect Medicaid Fraudster Act. Would probably be a better description of that?” Johnson said. “Correct,” Shirley responded. According to a report from Newsmax, Johnson made an appearance on the “Ed Henry: The Big Take” podcast, where he recounted the interaction with Shirley.
Johnson told Henry that “not one Democrat showed up to question” Shirley, going on to add that the ranking member of the committee only attended to “mainly denigrate Nick Shirley’s efforts.” Johnson then accused Democrats of refusing to sign off on funds for several key government priorities, including Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the National Defense Authorization Act.

“They refuse to fund CBP and ICE. They refuse to move on to the National Defense Authorization Act. They’ve completely upended the appropriations process. It’s in shambles,” Johnson explained during the program. “They want chaos.” Johnson then stated that Americans should recognize “the destructive nature of radical leftism” and made the case that “the Democratic Party is the party of the radical left.”
One individual commented on the Facebook clip of the interaction, stating that if California passes the law, they should not receive federal funding. “If California does it, then tell California to fund themselves and do state taxes. No federal assistance in those programs if they don’t want to be questioned fairly.” Someone else noted, “The California bill would be blatantly unconstitutional, based on previous Supreme Court rulings.”
