Another day another pop culture star committing a crime. Today it’s not a football player at the University of Georgia or an NFL star, but rather a rapper named Kodak Black. Black lives in Florida and was released on bail when he failed a drug test. The original crime for which he was on bail was a drug charge for trafficking oxycodone.
Breitbart reports that the warrant for Black’s arrest was issued Thursday. Black’s legal name is Bill Kapri. He first did not appear for a scheduled drug test and then, a few days later, tested positive for fentanyl in the sample that he submitted.
Broward County Judge Barbara Duffy issued the warrant, writing that Black had violated the terms of his release on bail by testing positive for fentanyl. The AP, reporting on Black’s arrest for trafficking oxycodone at the time it occurred, wrote that:
Rapper Kodak Black was arrested in South Florida on charges of trafficking in oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance.
The rapper, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was booked Friday into jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he awaits a bond hearing.
The Florida Highway Patrol said in a release that troopers pulled Black over because he was driving a purple SUV with window tints that appeared darker than the legal limit.
They detected a marijuana smell and then searched the SUV and found a small clear bag with 31 white tablets and almost $75,000 in cash. The tablets were later identified as oxycodone.
The agency says record checks also revealed that Black’s vehicle tag and driver’s license were both expired.
Kodak Black was released from prison in 2020 when Trump commuted his weapons charges sentence in 2021. Pitchfork, reporting on that at the time, said:
Kodak Black’s current sentence stems from a May 2019 arrest for indicating on paperwork that he was not under indictment while trying to purchase firearms. At the time, he was out on bond for sexual assault charges in South Carolina. In March 2020, Kodak Black pled guilty to second degree criminal possession of a weapon following an April 2019 arrest at the border between the United States and Canada. The rapper was in prison as Trump pardoned him on his final full day in office.
The White House’s official statement about Kodak Black’s commutation noted the support of Gucci Mane, Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, and more. “Before his conviction and after reaching success as a recording artist, Kodak Black became deeply involved in numerous philanthropic efforts,” the statement reads. “In fact, he has committed to supporting a variety of charitable efforts, such as providing educational resources to students and families of fallen law enforcement officers and the underprivileged.”
“I Want To Thank The President For His Commitment To Justice Reform And Shortening My Sentence,” Kodak Black tweeted. “I Also Want To Thank Everyone For Their Support And Love. It Means More Than You Will Ever Know. I Want To Continue Giving Back, Learning And Growing.”
It’s not clear why Trump pardoned Black, as the election was already over and blacks largely supported Joe Biden in it. In any case, Black will soon be headed back to prison.
