Residents React with Fury after Blue City Raises Somali Flag in Celebration

A Somali flag ceremony held on June 30, 2026, in Ohio’s capital city of Columbus, caused a firestorm of criticism and controversy as those opposed to the event asked why officials were honoring the flag of a foreign nation just a few short days before America celebrates Independence Day. The ceremony was connected to Somalia’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on July 1.

The day commemorates the 1960 formation of the Republic of Somalia after it was liberated from colonial rule. The city of Columbus has one of the largest Somali populations in the United States, and local leaders have taken steps in the past to recognize it with public ceremonies, including lighting up City Hall blue and raising the Somali flag.

However, the latest display of the flag got the attention of folks online, where residents and a number of conservative pundits began lobbing accusations at city leaders for sending the wrong message at the wrong time. Overall, most of the criticism was aimed at the timing of the event. With America’s Independence Day being celebrated on July 4, critics said that public officials ought to be focused on celebrating the U.S. flag, not raising one from a foreign country on an official government site.

According to a report from Trending Politics News, those who were in favor of the ceremony said it was a celebration of the large Somali community in Columbus and the contributions it has made to the city. Those opposed saw it differently, describing it as an example of blue-city leaders leaning into typical left-wing multiculturalism while pride in the U.S. is seen as an afterthought.

Things quickly escalated from there into a bigger battle over the issues of immigration, assimilation, and national identity. City officials previously recognized Somali Independence Day because of the large Somali-American population that calls the area home and the part they have played in its civic life. A look through social media revealed that many took the event as a symbol of the growing divide between regular voters and urban leaders who seem excited to celebrate every identity but the American one.

The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department posted about the event on its official X account, saying, “Happy Somali Independence Day! As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia.” White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller quickly responded to the post.

“Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250,” Miller wrote in his reply. According to a report from Fox News, journalist Mark Hemingway said of the ceremony, “No American government building should ever be raising another country’s flag. Ugh.” Political commentator and lawyer Mehek Cooke said, “City Hall is not a foreign embassy.”

As an Ohioan, I am repulsed by the anti-Americanism here. Our leaders treat foreign nationalism as sacred while treating American patriotism as controversial. America’s public buildings should honor America,” Cooke continued. “This is AMERICA, not Little Somalia,” ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel stated on social media. “Flying the Somali flag at City Hall isn’t ‘celebration.’ It’s cultural surrender. Other nations aren’t parallel cultures here to dominate ours. Remove that flag. Remove the officials who demand it.”
