The Department of Justice has now opened an investigation into Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) for alleged campaign finance violations, according to several reports that are making their way around social media. A “source familiar with the probe” spoke with Axios, revealing that the investigation into the Arizona Democrat is the result of a “whistleblower complaint” from Southern California.
The news outlet then said that the probe into Gallego “comes after the Senate Ethics Committee closed its inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations.” The report then noted, “The Justice Department’s probe comes after the Senate Ethics Committee closed its inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations after finding no evidence that Gallego violated Senate rules or applicable law, according to a letter released by his office Monday.”
The investigation comes after it was reported that the Arizona senator allegedly billed “Super Bowl tickets worth $37,500,” flights to various locations such as Puerto Rico, Miami, and St. Barths with his family, and “more than $26,000 in child care” to his “campaign accounts since 2019,” according to a report from The New York Times.
A report from Breitbart News revealed that Gallego has “defended the travel as legal and appropriate costs for fund-raising trips.” The NY Times also pointed out that “it was not clear if it was Mr. Gallego’s travel that triggered the investigation.” A spokesman representing the senator said the investigation into his boss was “politically motivated.”
A report published by Politico on June 21, 2026, stated that Gallego “used his leadership PAC to fund recent trips to Miami, Chicago, Disneyland and Disney World with his family.” He also allegedly “tapped that PAC and his main campaign committee for more than $18,000 in reimbursements for child care since 2019.” All of this comes after the Senate Ethics Committee closed its official inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct by Gallego.
“[President] Trump is targeting Senator Gallego while the most weaponized Department of Justice in history is turning a blind eye to Trump’s unprecedented corruption,” a Gallego spokesperson went on to tell Axios in a statement. “It’s the least surprising news of the week that this comes immediately after the Senate Ethics Committee cleared Senator Gallego of right-wing smears pushed by the administration.”
Earlier in June, Gallego hired former Biden deputy press secretary Andrew Bates to help with crisis communications, which includes any dealings with the Senate ethics panel or potential fallout from the senator’s close relationship with disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA). Swalwell resigned from his congressional seat after four women came forward accusing him of sexual assault, rape, and harassment.

Users on social media platform X had some strong feelings about Gallego and the corruption he is accused of indulging in. “So much for your crowing yesterday, Sen. Gallego, that ethics violation charges are a lie. Now you have to answer to the DOJ,” one user wrote. “Ruben is a joke. We will NEVER let him get re-elected again in AZ,” another individual commented on the story.
