Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was defeated by President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race, is in the spotlight again, this time for saying that the word “hope” should be “changed to a verb.” The problem with Harris’ statement is that “hope” already is. It can be used as both a noun and a verb. Such a statement, according to conservatives, proves that America dodged a bullet by electing Trump instead of Harris.
The comment was made on former CNN host Don Lemon’s podcast. At no point during the program did he correct her. Folks on social media, where the comment has now gone viral, decided to do Lemon’s job for him, with one user saying, “It’s a noun: ‘I have hope that she never runs for any government office again.’ And it’s a verb: ‘I hope she never runs for any government office again.”
The gaffe came as part of one of her typical “word salad” rambles as she attempted to explain how to stay positive after a setback, something likely inspired by her massive loss to Trump after serving as former President Joe Biden’s vice president. “I really, truly believe this. We we each have have light inside of us. And we need to know that that is what inspires our hope as much as anything external to ourselves,” she started.
“And when we feel that and and and not allow an election or an individual to dampen that light, and instead light, let that light kind of carry us in particular through moments of darkness, that that we not only act on that hope, but we inspire that hope in each other,” she continued, according to a report from Breitbart News.
“And in particular, at this moment, it is so important that we not only have hope, but that we understand that that should be a verb,” Harris concluded in what she no doubt probably considered some sort of brilliant moment of enlightenment. As the comment spread across social media, a number of witty, sarcastic responses emerged.
“When the teacher told you to write a 300 word essay but you could only think of 100 words,” one user cleverly wrote. Another individual decided to play the role of Harris’ editor, wisecracking, “Good word salad answer that can be summed up in two words, stay positive.” Lemon then asked Harris if she was planning on running for the presidency in 2028.
“I have not decided, to be honest with you,” Harris told Lemon, leaving the door open for a potential White House bid in the future. “I’ve been spending a lot of time traveling the country [and] listening to folks,” she added. “I think that people want a leader who is willing to take risks, as opposed to just doing what is popular.”

“I think people want to know that they are being seen and heard, and that their leaders — whether they’re at the local, state, federal level or in the White House — are looking first at the people. You know, not looking at themselves in the mirror,” Harris bloviated. There were a few individuals on social media who wanted to see her running again and lose. “The only thing missing was ‘…And we keep hoping for that hope every single day.’ Same old word salad Kamala. She is not fixable. I hope she runs again.”
