In one of his more off-the-chain and entertaining Truth Social tirades about former President Barack Hussein Obama, President Donald Trump reshared a post in which the original poster accused the former president of treason and demanded that he be charged and prosecuted for it. Such came in the late hours of the night of May 11 and the wee hours of the morning on May 12.
As background, the general basis of Trump’s allegations, and the allegations he was amplifying, came from now-former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who alleged and revealed that the former president had engaged in what she characterized as a “years-long coup” against President Trump.
She said, making that point, “So the effect of what President Obama and his senior national security team did was subvert the will of the American people, undermining our democratic republic, and enacting what would be essentially a years-long coup against President Trump, who was duly elected by the American people.”
That wasn’t all. Commenting on the report shortly after it was released, during an appearance on Sunday Morning Futures, Gabbard explained that what they had so far found was enough to show former President Obama was involved in a “treasonous conspiracy,” saying, “The implications of this are frankly nothing short of historic. Over a hundred documents that we released on Friday really detail and provide evidence of how this treasonous conspiracy was directed by President Obama just weeks before he was due to leave office after President Trump had already gotten elected.”
Many MAGA commentators have since echoed that viewpoint, and demanded that the former president face treason charges because of his involvement in the “treasonous conspiracy” that DNI Gabbard revealed. Amongst them was social media personality “Catturd”, who wrote, “Arrest Obama the traitor”. Trump reshared an image of the post, effectively endorsing it. See that here:
That wasn’t the only time that Trump has pushed such messaging. In the immediate wake of Tulsi Gabbard revealing the “years long coup” and “treasonous conspiracy”, President Trump told reporters, “They tried to rig the election, and they got caught. And there should be very severe consequences for that.”

That wasn’t all. Also when speaking to reporters at the time, Trump made it clear that he thought Obama had committed treason, saying, “This was treason. This was every word you can think of. They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever even imagined, even in other countries.”
A spokesperson for Obama angrily denounced the claims, saying that the Obamas would “not normally dignify the constant nonsense” from the Trump White House with an official response, but in this case the claims are “outrageous enough to merit one.” The spokesperson added, “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”
