A woke company whose virtue signaling ranks among the best was outed by a leading left-wing outlet for not practicing what they preach. Reporting by the New York Times suggests that the ideology-driven ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s relies on child migrant labor within their supply chain.
The insufferable Vermont-based company has for years stated to “honor and stand with” immigrants. It is also potentially running afoul of existing child labor laws.
The New York Times published a wide-reaching expose that implicated not just Ben & Jerry’s but pretty much every major brand that has made appeals to its wonderful wokeness in one way or another. Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Ford, and General Motors were all named by the Times expose as participating in the use of child labor within their supply chains.
Fox News analyzed the article and came away with some alarming facts, saying:
A New York Times expose, released earlier this week, interviewed more than 100 migrant children in more than 20 states “who described jobs that were grinding them into exhaustion, and fears that they had become trapped in circumstances they never could have imagined,” Fox News said of the expose. “The report detailed children as young as 13 working 12-hour days, often overnight shifts before going to school during the day, in order to survive.”
“Ben & Jerry’s is opposed to child labor of any kind whatsoever. The company has an established track record standing for justice and equity for all including five plus years with Milk with Dignity supporting migrant workers. The Milk with Dignity Standards Council ensures that farmworkers are fairly compensated for their labor, work in healthy conditions, and builds in additional safeguards for those who are 16 and 17,” a spokesperson for the company said.
Ben & Jerry’s has a prolific history promoting pretty much every major left-wing agenda item. It has famously produced a flavor for Colin Kaepernick called “Change the Whirled” and it produced a 2018 flavor with a focused intention of resisting the Trump administration called “Pecan Resist.”
The company also released stunning names like “EmpowerMint” to draw attention to supposed voter suppression and “I, Dough” in support of the legalization of gay marriage. It has also pledged its full support of Black Lives Matter through various campaigns, one of which used the likeness of Squad member Cori Bush with the ice cream title “Change is Brewing.” Proceeds for that went to support defunding of the police.
The list goes on and on. Perhaps most incredibly it supported the anti-Semitic BDS movement. As a result of that, Florida governor Ron DeSantis added to a list of companies the state of Florida would not be willing to work with.
Of course, for people paying attention – i.e. not left-wing news outlets – the rife hypocrisy from these virtue-signaling frauds is anything but new. As detailed by the blog Dispropaganda, several instances of saying one thing and doing another have been par for the course for several years. In 2020, they wrote:
B&J was the target of a campaign by migrant workers on dairy farms which supplied B&J – including illegal immigrants – over poor working conditions.
Workers were housed in barns and unheated trailers and reportedly worked 12 to 14 hour days.
Basic rights such as real beds (rather than straw piles) and payment of the minimum wage had to be fought for
They continued:
When it comes to black lives matters B&J are huge supporters of the BLM movement and have repeatedly and publicly stated that “WE MUST DISMANTLE WHITE SUPREMACY!”
However in reality B&J, which is run by two white males (talk about white supremacy…) had no problem abusing black people, even children, as long as they could make a profit out of it, and only stopped when they were exposed.
