Tom Sizemore’s family has begun discussing end-of-life matters after the actor suffered a brain aneurysm in early February and has been in a coma. According to the actor’s representative on the day of the incident, the situation looks bleak.
The aneurysm occurred at 2 am on a Saturday, and Sizemore was quickly taken to a hospital, where he has remained in intensive care. According to the representative, Charles Lago, the family has been told by doctors to discuss end-of-life matters, as told by CNN:
“Today, doctors informed his family that there is no further hope and have recommended end of life decision. The family is now deciding end of life matters and a further statement will be issued on Wednesday.
“We are asking for privacy for his family during this difficult time and they wish to thank everyone for the hundreds of messages of support, and prayers that have been received. This has been a difficult time for them.”
The Mayo Clinic offers a quick and informative explanation of brain aneurysms and their severity:
“A brain aneurysm (AN-yoo-riz-um) is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. An aneurysm often looks like a berry hanging on a stem.”
“A brain aneurysm can leak or rupture, causing bleeding into the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). Most often, a ruptured brain aneurysm occurs in the space between the brain and the thin tissues covering the brain. This type of hemorrhagic stroke is called a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
“A ruptured aneurysm quickly becomes life-threatening and requires prompt medical treatment.”
Sizemore is most well-known for his role as Sgt. Horvath in ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ but he also played roles in many other hugely successful films such as ‘Blackhawk Down,’ ‘Pearl Harbor,’ ‘Natural Born Killer,’ and ‘Heat.’ Sizemore delivered the most impactful line in ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ saying:
“But another part of me thinks what if, by some miracle, we stay, and actually make it out of here. Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving Private Ryan was one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole godawful shitty mess. That’s what I was thinking, sir. Like you said, Captain, we do that, then we all earn the right to go back home.”
Sizemore had a very public battle with substance abuse that dates all the way back to 2003 when he was convicted on domestic violence charges. In 2010, he spoke to Larry King and said the following about where all those issues started for him:
“Yes, I came to Hollywood and I started to make — I never had money in my life and then I had a lot of money. And I met some young stars that I admired their work, and the first time I did cocaine was with a famous actor whose name I can’t tell you. I’m not going to tell you because he’s a terrific guy.
“I didn’t want to do it, but there was people in this room and he did it, and I went if he did it, I’m going to do it. And I did it, it took a couple minutes and I went wow, that is bomb. Where do you get that? Do you have any more of it?”
