The University of Kentucky’s football program was slammed by the sudden passing of freshman defensive lineman Nic Smith, which was officially announced on June 8, 2026. Football coach Will Stein put out a statement concerning Smith’s death, saying, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and loved him.”

“This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” Stein’s statement continued. Smith first joined the Wildcats in the Class of 2025 as a three-star defensive lineman, hailing from Georgia. His first season with the team, Smith was a redshirt freshman and didn’t get to play in any games.

Smith was considered to be a promising addition to Kentucky’s defense as the program began building for the future. The young lineman was the son of Spencer and Kisha Smith and Genedra Smalls. Smith is survived by his siblings, Jackson Roundtree, Killik Smith, Arkeion Smith, Nedra Roundtree, Valencia Murray, and Ariana Smith.

According to a report from Trending Politics News, Smith was attending the school in pursuit of a degree in community and leadership development. No further details concerning the young man’s death were released by the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats community has come to the aid of Smith’s family and teammates following the news of his tragic passing, as players, coaches, and supporters pay tribute to a life taken far too soon.

A report from Fox News revealed that a school official said the university’s police department was working closely with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner and said that an initial investigation of Smith’s passing did not indicate that foul play was involved. The report said that Smith’s nicknames were “Happy” and “Big Happ,” indicating he had a pleasant and positive disposition that likely brightened the atmosphere around him.

The comment section of the Fox report ran rampant with all kinds of speculation about what might have led to Smith’s death. Some suggested it might have been related to drugs, with one user saying, “Too many young men and young athletes are dying. It seems oftentimes drugs are involved.” Another person simply expressed sympathy for the family’s loss.

“That’s a shame. My condolences to his family. 20 years is way too young. He should have had his whole life ahead of him,” the user commented. Someone else wrote, “What a wasted life. He didn’t even start to live. What the hell is happening? We need to protect the young and share more of ourselves with them. Show them a path where they can succeed and start a wonderful journey through life. God bless him.”

One person noted the danger of providing college kids with money for playing sports, saying, “If drugs were involved, and I hope not, but if…. then stop paying these kids for “playing”, and return to promoting academics, instead. Too much money is thrown around to athletes. Does a student who brings academic scholarship and pride to the school get monetarily rewarded? NOPE. We are promoting stupidity.”
