Detested Democrat Mayor Resigns in Disgrace Just Months after Winning New Term

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, 73, stated that she will resign from her position effective June 30, 2026, a shocking move that comes only six months after the five-term Democrat won her reelection bid to head up the country’s 14th-largest city. “Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life,” Lyles, 73, said in a recently published statement.

“I am proud of our record navigating various challenges, strengthening our economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a foundation for Charlotte’s continued success during a time of rapid growth,” Lyles continued. “As in all things politics, I am sure there will be speculation as to why I am making this decision now,” the statement added. “Simply put, I am going to spend time with my grandchildren. Like many of us, I have missed some moments with them and intend to not miss anymore.”

Lyles won her reelection bid in 2025 with relative ease after facing questions about her next run for office and being pressed about her lack of recent visibility and active leadership of the city. According to reports from local media outlets, Lyles had been missing an increasing number of City Council meetings, more so than she had in the past, after years of regularly presiding over them.

The mayor also had not attended a number of monthly zoning meetings for several consecutive months, maybe even longer, according to a report from Fox News. Some folks in the local community, private sector, and civil government, raised concerns about Lyles’ health and whether she was fit to discharge the duties of her office.

WFAE issued a report stating that, at times, Lyles appeared to be confused during procedural discussions, including at a recent council meeting she had to be reminded that she needed to cast a tiebreaking vote. When a WFAE reporter asked Lyles if she intended to complete her term during an event at the Government Center, she declined to answer. “We will see,” she responded, several days before announcing her resignation.

Lyles’ resignation will leave the Charlotte City Council to choose who finishes the rest of her term. Her critics on social media have ripped into her for the resignation following her recent reelection, stating that giving the council power to choose her replacement undermines the democratic voting process, handing political power to a few.

“I am very proud of my record as mayor, but I also firmly believe that true leadership includes knowing when it is time to let the next generation of leaders take over,” Lyles statement continued. “By leaving early, the voters will have more time to learn about their candidates. Our city is strong, our trajectory is positive, and now is the right moment for someone else to build on our progress from the past few years.”

Rising crime rates, especially violent crimes committed by illegal aliens and repeat offenders, have been on the rise under Lyles’ leadership, with her critics placing the blame for the issue on her “soft-on-crime” policies. The criticism reached its peak following the horrific train stabbing of a Ukrainian woman, Iryna Zarutska, 23, who was killed by Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. Brown had 14 prior cases and had served five years in prison for robbery with a dangerous weapon, along with being committed for schizophrenia, yet was somehow allowed back on the streets.
