Posting on Facebook, leftist North Carolina lawmaker Terence Everitt, who was once banished to an office in a basement supply closet during his feud with the then-Speaker of the House, announced that he has decided to resign from office. He will instead be focusing on running a leftist non-profit in the state.
For reference, the supply closet situation occurred in 2023, when Everitt pressed the Wake County district attorney to investigate the then-Speaker of the House, a Republican named Tim Moore. Everitt insisted an investigation was necessary because of the Speaker’s affair with a state employee. In the wake of pressing for such an investigation, Everitt found his legislative office moved to a supply room in the General Assembly’s basement.
Moore mocked Everitt in a letter describing the reason for the move, noting that he had been involved in an altercation with another lawmaker and then ran and hid in someone else’s office, and that such tactics would be rendered unnecessary by his new one. “Please know that I believe all members should be able to express themselves without the need to hide in a staffer’s office regardless of how timid they are to avoid direct confrontation,” Moore said. He added that the office was “somewhat removed, has multiple points of ingress and egress and is close to the General Assembly Police office.”
In any case, Everitt announced his decision to leave the state legislative body in a post made on Facebook on April 28. He said, “Over the last 7 years, it has been the honor of my life to serve in the North Carolina General Assembly – first in the State House, and most recently representing Senate District 18 and the people of Wake and Granville Counties.”
Continuing, he said, “In January, I began working at the North Carolina Voter Protection Alliance where we are working every day to protect the right to vote in North Carolina and ensure fair elections in our state. Since returning to the legislative session, it has become clear that defending our democracy requires my focus and dedication. The Republican majorities in our legislature are hell-bent on assaulting our democracy, suppressing voting rights, and restricting North Carolinians access to the ballot box. This is a fight we must win, and I am determined to defend our state’s democracy at all costs.”
He then insisted, “For that reason, in consultation with my family and closest advisors, I have made the difficult decision to resign from the North Carolina Senate and will withdraw my name from the 2026 General Election ballot. I have immense gratitude for everyone who has been on this journey with me since 2016.”
He concluded the post by saying, “I want to sincerely thank all my constituents for the trust you’ve placed in me to represent you and your family. While my time in elected office has come to an end, I understand the pivotal moment we face in North Carolina’s history. I believe in our state and I look forward to continuing to fight for it with everything I have.”
