Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is being hit with a bevy of anti-corruption probes as he continues to make moves against the U.S. government and military. The headquarters of the Socialist Party were raided by Spanish investigators, as scandals continue to pop up all around the Spanish leader, such as his administration’s bailout of a Spanish airline, a public contract kickback scheme, and a newly established rivalry with President Donald Trump.
“How many more raids? How many more kickbacks?” Spanish conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo went on to say. He then added that the Spanish government is in its “death throes.” Reports have revealed that the Spanish Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit was sent in to gather alleged evidence of a plot to discredit critics of the administration in cases against the government.
Socialist Party Financial Manager Ana Fuentes was also indicted for allegedly playing a part in the corruption case. Spain has become a vocal opponent of the U.S. military’s operations in the Middle Eastern country of Iran. The nation shut down its airspace to all U.S. aircraft on March 30, which is a major slap in the face as both countries are members of NATO.
According to the Daily Caller, Euronews reported that Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said that, “Spain should not do anything that could escalate the conflict.” The report then stated that the country’s third-largest political party, VOX, slammed the alleged corruption in a post by Ignacio Garriga, the secretary-general of the party, on social media platform X.
“While the government was robbing Spaniards with abusive taxes, it was dismantling public services. A mafia that came to power with the greatest act of corruption possible, with an Amnesty Law.” The raid has also sparked renewed interest in Spain’s former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is currently in the middle of a battle against his own set of corruption allegations.
He is scheduled to appear in court on June 17, 2026. The corruption case surrounding a government bailout for Plus Ultra airline allegedly concerns 53 million euros during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, where Zapatero received 2.6 million euros from a criminal network that applied pressure to ensure the deal was pushed through. This is also bad for Sanchez who has made Zapatero a close ally of the current administration.
“[The administration has] full cooperation with the justice system, full respect for the presumption of innocence of Mr Zapatero and all my support for [him],” Politico stated in a report, citing Sánchez. Sanchez recently announced he would be running for reelection in 2027. Much of his campaign will likely be spent on his current rivalry with President Trump.

The scandal could potentially impact voter turnout for the Socialist Party as well. Four regional elections were held in Spain through the month of May. The Socialist Party lost every single one of them to the People’s Party. As of now, the future of the country’s political climate remains in the air as the alleged corruption cases make their way through the Spanish National Court.
