The world of motorsports has been hit yet again with another major loss just days after the death of Kyle Busch, as news broke announcing the death of Indianapolis 500 driver Rick Treadway, who died at the age of 56, following a tragic motorcycle accident. The news of Treadway’s passing broke on June 1, 2026, following his succumbing to injuries sustained in a crash on May 30.
Treadway is remembered by those who knew him best, including former competitors, as being a larger-than-life personality. The beloved driver made his only Indy 500 appearance in 2002, qualifying in 17th place before going on to finish 29th in the No. 5 Sprint/Kyocera Wireless/Airlink Enterprises G Force-Chevrolet entry fielded by Treadway Racing, which was owned by his father, Fred Treadway.
He also competed alongside two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk. Luyendyk was one of the first folks within the racing community to offer a tribute to Treadway following his untimely death. “Sad news hearing Rick Treadway passed away last Saturday. Our condolences go out to my former @IndyCar team owner Fred Treadway, Janice, and Brian Treadway,” he said on social media platform X.
“Rick was a fun, crazy, humble, wild and brave personality! RIP Ricky. We are thinking of you Treadway family,” Luyendyk added. According to a report from Trending Politics News, Treadway made his IndyCar debut in 2001 at the Kentucky Speedway. He competed through the 2002 season finale, which was held at Texas Motor Speedway. Treadway’s best career finish was fifth place at Texas back in 2001.
Before he made his way into the IndyCar ranks, Treadway established himself in Sports Car Club of America competitions and Formula 2000 racing. Many of Treadway’s fans took to social media to share fond memories of him along with well wishes for his surviving family members. One fan said, “Oh man!! Great guy!! Race in peace, Rick!!”
Conor Daly, an IndyCar driver, also paid tribute to Treadway. “Really sad to see this news today. If you listen to @SpeedStreetPod you know how much this name means to a certain segment of our show. RIP Ricky,” he wrote. “We’ll keep doing our #indy500 driver research in your honor,” Daly added. Treadway’s death comes just days after the passing of NASCAR star Kyle Busch, who died from complications attributed to pneumonia that turned into sepsis.
Busch, 41, died while at a hospital in North Carolina, shortly before the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The illness had sidelined the well-known racer for weeks before his condition grew worse. His death also came several months after he and his wife reached an out-of-court settlement in a lawsuit against Pacific Life Insurance Company.

Reports say that the couple alleged they were tricked into buying life insurance policies and claimed they paid over $10.4 million in premiums based on several misleading illustrations and promises concerning future returns. Racing fans were left devastated by the news of his sudden passing and Treadway’s passing will only add to their grief.
