Sydney Sweeney Fires Back as the Left Accuses Her of Being “MAGA Barbie”

Popular Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney recently responded to claims by radical leftists that she is a “MAGA Barbie,” stating that she rarely pays attention to such rhetoric as she has no control over how people perceive her political beliefs. The Euphoria star also said that people on social media try to use her as a political “pawn” on both sides of the aisle, but explained that she has zero interest in talking about how she votes.

Sweeney sat down for an interview with Cosmopolitan, where she told the outlet, “I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.”

When the magazine asked The Housemaid star why she doesn’t try to correct claims that she’s a “MAGA Barbie” if they aren’t true, she replied, “I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person. If I say, ‘That’s not true,’ they’ll come at me like, ‘You’re just saying that to look better.’ There’s no winning. There’s never any winning. I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can’t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.”

According to a new report from Deadline, Sweeney became a target for the culture war, which includes a whole lot of politics, in the summer of 2025, thanks to her controversial viral “great genes/jeans” ads for popular clothing brand American Eagle. Liberals claimed the ad promoted white supremacy. Sweeney herself opted not to comment on the situation.

A report from The Guardian claimed Sweeney was a registered Republican voter in Florida, just a few months prior to then-GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump making his triumphant return to the White House. In response to the news, Trump said, “I think her ad is fantastic.” Sweeney then told Cosmopolitan that having people weigh in on your beliefs is uncomfortable.

“It’s definitely not a comfortable thing to have people saying what you believe or think, especially when that doesn’t align with you. It’s been a weird thing having to navigate and digest, because it’s not me. None of it is me,” Sweeney told the outlet. Commenters had strong thoughts on Sweeney’s take for remaining silent about her political ideology.

One individual posted on the Deadline story, “The ‘Freedom of Speech’ also comes with an equal right to the ‘Freedom of Silence.” People have a right to speak out on anything they choose to and a right to be silent about anything they choose.” Another person said her silence is essentially a confirmation she’s Republican and supports MAGA.

“She’s obviously Republican, all of her family is, but she doesn’t want to come out 100% because she knows it would hurt her career in the long run. If she really was bothered to be involved with the MAGA movement she would speak immediately,” the commenter said. Someone else wrote, “It’s really none of your business if she is Republican or not. She has already said she is not a hateful person. That should be enough.”
