DHS Secretary Gets Serious about Pulling CBP Agents Out of Sanctuary City Airports to Shut Them Down

In absolutely titanic news out of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that would dramatically escalate the war against sanctuary cities and their refusals to abide by federal law, Secretary Markwayne Mullin revealed that he is seriously contemplating yanking Customs and Border Protection (CBP) out of sanctuary city airports.

For reference, Secretary Mullin has made the threat before, but has not yet followed through on it. Many conservatives are increasingly demanding that he actually follow through, however, particularly as the sanctuary city resistance to ICE picks back up with the warming of the weather.

So, according to Secretary Mullin, DHS is “drawing up plans” to pull CBP out of airports in sanctuary cities, which would utterly shut them down. Such is what Mullin told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity on Tuesday, May 26, saying, “We are currently – which we’re not initiating yet – but we’re currently drawing up plans.” He continued, “We shouldn’t be processing international flights into their cities.” Building on that, he explained, “local radical left Democrats aren’t allowing us to do our job and enforce federal laws.”

It was Fox News Channel’s congressional correspondent, Bill Melugin, who drew serious attention to the matter on X, announcing, “NEW: Last night on@FoxNews, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin again said he is considering pulling CBP out of sanctuary city airports, adding that “we are currently drawing up plans” to do so.”

Adding to that, Melugin noted that the attacks on ICE in New Jersey, and the sanctuary policies allowing that to happen, are what seem to have stimulated the new policy. He said, “His comments came in response to protests at ICE’s Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, NJ, where he says local police won’t respond to assist due to sanctuary policies.”

Yet further, Melugin explained what airports might be impacted by this, saying, “Pulling CBP out of sanctuary airports would have an enormous chain reaction impact, as international travelers would no longer be able to fly into airports like LAX, JFK, San Francisco, Chicago, Newark, Seattle, Denver, Philly, etc, as there would be no customs agents to process them.”

Concluding, he explained that while Mullin has not made a firm decision, this would be a massive escalation in policy. He said, “Additionally, Mullin points out that Democrats have refused to fund CBP. It’s unclear how serious/advanced this idea is, as Mullin has said no final decision has been made – but such a move would likely have enormous ripple effects if it were to come to fruition.”

Commenters on Melugin’s post indicated that they would like to see sanctuary cities face much more vengeance from the Trump Administration, saying things like: “Sanctuary cities and states shouldn’t have an option. If they won’t comply, pull the agents from airports and let them suffer the consequences for a change” and “It’s absolutely time to increase the pain for those cities, this sounds like a good start”.
