A piece penned by the California Post Editorial Board — which is connected to the New York Post — took Sacramento City Council member Mai Vang who is currently running for the Golden State’s 7th Congressional District, to the proverbial woodshed, saying that she shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near Congress due to her anti-American views and obvious displays of hatred for the U.S. flag and Pledge of Allegiance.
The report stated, emphatically, that those who are against pledging their allegiance to America should have no place in government service. Writers of the article immediately connect that principle to Mai Vang. The radical leftist has a lengthy history of making a big spectacle of turning her back on the flag during the Pledge, even on Veterans Day, a holiday meant to celebrate the brave men and women who have sacrificed much to uphold the values the flag represents.
In February 2025, Vang published a post on Facebook, saying, “As much as I love this country, I use that moment [during the Pledge] to ground myself — to center our communities and remind myself of the injustices and harm that continue to affect so many, both locally and across the globe, under this nation’s influence.”
In other words, the whole thing is purely performative, a virtue signal, designed to appease fellow radical leftists and Democrats and to appear as though she is truly working toward righting wrongs experienced by specific protected classes of Americans, when in reality, there is no actual application of effort to solving these issues. That’s what many conservatives are saying, anyway.
According to the California Post, “It’s hard to believe that ‘love’ of country inspires not allegiance, but contempt for alleged ‘injustices and harm … locally and across the globe.’ Besides, reciting the Pledge, with hand over heart, does not signify that one agrees with everything the government does, will do, or has done. It signals loyalty to the nation itself, respect for the land of opportunity, and care for the values — foremost, liberty — upon which this country was founded.”
The Post notes that those who refuse to participate in patriotic rituals have the right to refrain and to speak out against such practices, thanks to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It notes that such action can itself be patriotic. However, the article goes on to explain that, “the patriotic kind involves rational debate and discussion — and respect for institutions — not a stunt, performed repeatedly, that calls to mind a sulky 5-year-old.”
The article delves deep into what America truly is, at its core, which is an idea, one that is rooted in self-determination and in a government that is limited by the enumerated powers outlined in the Constitution, which was designed to preserve personal liberty. The piece also discussed how Vang has consistently pushed for defunding Sacramento’s police force, saying more police does not equal an increase in public safety. It goes on to outline the radical agenda Vang supports, which includes the abolition of ICE, protecting gender-affirming care, promoting the Green New Deal, and much more, as reasons for Californians not casting their ballots for Vang.
