Appearing for an interview in which he discussed what is going on in the far-left, sanctuary state of New York, former Democratic New York Gov. David Paterson went absolutely nuclear on Gov. Kathy Hochul over the sort of anti-ICE legislation in which the governor and her party have engaged. The interview came on Sunday, May 24, vowing that the legislation amounts to being a very serious blunder that could lead to a massive number of lawsuits
Such came when Peterson appeared on John Catsimatidis’ “Cats Roundtable” radio show on 77 WABC, noting that the new legislation–which strips counties in the state of New York of their authority to work with federal agents–is a major escalation that is gonna cause huge issues for the state, not least of which are lawsuits and federal raids targeting the state.
Paterson, who served as the governor of the state of New York from 2008 to 2010, doing so as a Democrat, noted that the latest legislation is just blatantly unconstitutional given what the Constitution says about state and federal power. “The last I heard, the federal government supersedes the local government,” Paterson said during his appearance on 77 WABC. He added, “When I was governor, I tried to adhere to that.”
Speaking yet further about the matter, Peterson argued that the more Republican counties in the state could band together against the Democratic governor and her absurd legislation. He began, “Nassau County, Suffolk County, the other counties around the state could ban together and bring a lawsuit against the state legislature itself, and the governor for taking this approach.” He added, “It was an egregious mistake they made.”
That will likely be the case. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, for his part, indicated that he would be suing if his county’s work with and contracts with ICE are voided by the state of New York’s terrible new law, for example. Similarly, Border Czar Tom Homan vowed to deploy more ICE agents to crack down in huge raids targeting the state and illegal aliens in it if Hochul signs the bill.
Blakeman, for his part, said, “Common Sense Democrats know that Kathy Hochul has made our neighborhoods less safe with her pro-criminal policies. Governor Paterson is a sensible and thoughtful Democrat who is rightfully appalled with Hochul’s support of this dangerous legislation.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul, for her part, has so far refused to back down. In fact, she has defended the legislation, claiming that it is not unconstitutional, but is rather a check on what she calls federal overreach. Perhaps most ridiculously, the governor insisted that the sanctuary law in the sanctuary state will ensure that there isn’t a sanctuary for criminal illegal aliens in the state. He said, “It’ll make New York a leader in addressing ICE overreach while also ensuring that there’s no sanctuary for criminals in this state.”
