While President Donald Trump wasn’t on the ballot in Indiana for the Republican primary, he was most definitely the big winner of the evening. The president scored a number of decisive victories in the Hoosier State when a significant number of the candidates he endorsed ended up ousting Republican In Name Only (RINO) incumbents who defied his push to redistrict and add more seats for the GOP in the House of Representatives.
The victories underscore that President Trump’s influence still dominates the Republican Party. Much of the country was keeping a close eye on the primary in Indiana because it was the first of a series of major tests this month for the endorsement power of the president in critical GOP showdowns. Clearly, the president passed.
Eight of the Indiana state senators who resisted the president’s pressure to vote in favor of redistricting, a move that would have helped Republicans in Congress hold power over the House in the upcoming midterm elections, faced GOP primary challenges. President Trump supported seven out of the eight challengers. Five of those who received his endorsement won, with one incumbent surviving the onslaught and one race, as of this writing, undecided.
According to a report from the Indiana Capital Chronicle revealed that “Those incumbent senators defeated were Travis Holdman of Markle, Jim Buck of Kokomo, Linda Rogers of Granger, Dan Dernulc of Highland, Rick Niemeyer of Lowell and Greg Walker of Columbus. All those winning challengers received at least 56% of the vote, according to preliminary tallies compiled by The Associated Press.”
Winners included Jeff Ellington, Trevor De Vries, Brian Schmutzler, Michelle Davis, Blake Fiechter, and Tracey Powell. With Trump’s endorsement came a massive influx of cash for the challengers. A total of $13.5 million was spent for the primary campaigns, which is almost a 5,000% increase from the $250,000 spent in 2024 on state Senate races.
One voter, Bridgett Flannery, stated that she backed “a more conservative” option when she cast her ballot during the primary. “We need representatives who are truly Republicans — who we don’t have to wonder how they’re going to vote or where they stand,” Flannery went on to say. “It’s not just (redistricting). It’s about what we’re doing about schools, for jobs and the economy and how we’re going to make better lives for our families.”
Spitfire, a conservative user on social media platform X, posted about the results of the primary, saying, “It’s a bloodbath for RINOs tonight. Take notice Congressional RINOs. We have had ENOUGH!” Another user shared the post, saying, “A well deserved bloodbath for those backstabbing RINOS! That makes me very happy! Keep up the great work MAGA!”

And that was the general sentiment shared by most in the comment section. One user stated that this was a warning for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, writing, “Tick-tock @johnthune. We warned you. Now watch your dominoes fall…you will be done in 28….Guaranteed.” Another said, “@HouseGOP
exactly! WE have had enough of you a**holes being all talk but NO action! Only morons like you guys could’ve squandered the CLEAR mandate WE gave you!”
