Potential future presidential candidate Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) is scheduled to visit Canada where she will attend a summit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and several other left-of-center politicians, where they will chat about “how to battle right-wing politicians on affordability.” All of this will take place as Carney’s administration continues to deepen economic ties with China.
Sen. Slotkin, along with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — both of whom are believed to be gearing up for a White House run in 2028 — will be in attendance at the event. Liberal politicians from Europe will also be present at the gathering organized by the Center for American Progress (CAP). The summit will focus on strategies to defeat right-wing politicians on the issue of affordability.
Neera Tanden, president of CAP, told the media that the meeting will be sharing thoughts and ideas on how to fight back against the authoritarian right, arguing that Democrats could learn from Carney who she claims has moved Canada’s Liberal Party “to the right on some issues” and “surged in popularity.” Tanden’s organization, it should be noted, has received millions of dollars a year in funding from George Soros’s Open Society Foundation.
According to a report from Breitbart News, former President Barack Obama will be dropping by Toronto where he will be delivering the keynote address at an event hosted by Canada 2020, a think tank that claims to promote a “more just, inclusive, and forward-thinking Canada.” Slotkin, who once told Democrats to “f***ing retake the flag,” dropped a video telling military personnel they could “refuse illegal orders.”
In an appearance on ABC’s This Week, Slotkin stated that she was worried the military would be used “against American citizens,” however, she acknowledged that Trump had not issued any illegal orders. President Trump, at the time, accused Democrats of being involved in “sedition,” while former CIA operations officer Bryan Dean Wright told Fox News that Slotkin “knew exactly what she was putting together with her little propaganda video.”
On January 16, 2026, Carney announced a “new strategic partnership” between Canada and China. The Canadian government revealed in a press release that “China presents enormous economic opportunities for Canada” as Ottawa seeks to diversify trade relationships and increase investment. One of the provisions in the agreement allows up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market at a most-favored-nation tariff rate of 6.1%.
House Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar warned the American government during a December 2025 hearing that vehicles made in China could pose a threat to national security by functioning as “potential spy platforms with a kill switch inside.” Moolenaar added that modern vehicles equipped with cameras, sensors, microphones, and internet connectivity could enable Beijing to collect sensitive data or disrupt transportation systems during a crisis.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) also weighed in, saying China had used “a familiar playbook of forced joint ventures, intellectual property theft, overproduction and dumping to dominate the auto sector,” adding that Chinese electric vehicles were usually priced “below what it would even cost to make a car.” Carney has also publicly advocated for reducing Canada’s reliance on the United States.
