A number of communist and socialist groups located in Minneapolis, Minnesota issued a call on May 1, 2026, also known as “May Day,” for a “revolution,” shining a spotlight on the rapidly spreading influence of radical leftist organizations at an event that is usually focused on workers’ rights. Some of the demonstrators who showed up denounced America’s capitalist system and advocated for government seizure of private property and the means of production.
Such calls are a huge shift in tone from previous May Day protests and events that typically centered around issues workers face on a daily basis. Demonstrators revealed a list of demands, which included items such as rent caps connected to income, a reduced work week, and, of course, the redistribution of wealth from billionaires.
The event, which pulled in over a thousand people, was pushed as an immigrant rights protest, but also brought together a variety of labor unions, activist organizations, and radical left-wing political groups, who all marched side-by-side. The Communist Party USA, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), the Revolutionary Communists of America (RCA), the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), and members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) were in attendance.
Members of these groups were spotted carrying flags with communist symbols such as the hammer and sickle. Individuals representing the Communist Party USA handed out newspapers and leaflets to folks participating in the demonstration. One of the headlines in the newspaper read, “Down with Trump’s War!” A few carried signs that featured slogans such as “F*** ICE,” and “Stop the War,” according to Fox News.
Others waved red flags associated with the Communist Party USA and banners displaying the hammer and sickle. An investigation conducted by Fox discovered that a U.S.-born tech entrepreneur, Neville Roy Singham, who currently resides in China, is a key figure in a network tied to far-left organizations involved in protests, which is part of a bigger mobilization effort tied to 600 other groups across the country.
However, when demonstrators were interviewed at the May Day rally in Minneapolis, many stated they had no clue who he was or waved off concerns about funding. Andy Koch, a member of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, spoke with Fox News and said that the United States is “run by billionaires” but should be run by working-class people. Koch then said that a donation from a billionaire to his organization is acceptable if it advances the cause.
“If one billionaire … wants to donate to progressive pro-worker causes, that’s great,” Koch explained. When he was asked to provide examples of successful socialist systems, Koch cited China, saying, “China’s doing pretty good right now,” and heaped praise on the former Soviet Union for having “done a lot for its people.” Members of the RCA were present at the event, with one individual saying he was “radicalized” in 2020, following the death of George Floyd.

“We’re calling for down with Trump and down with the Democrats,” the protester stated. The march was put together by several groups, with the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee playing a large part in its organization. The event was promoted under the slogan “Immigrants Rise! Workers Unite!” There was little to no police presence for most of the march.
