Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) represents one of the most competitive districts in the state of New Jersey and is considered to be one of the most vulnerable members of the House for Republicans for this year’s midterm elections, yet he seems to be missing in action. Reports have stated that not even his colleagues in the GOP know where he’s been for the last month.
The only explanation for Kean’s sudden disappearance from public life — and that includes missing key votes in Congress — is a statement from his team saying that he’s currently battling unspecified health issues. The New Jersey congressman, who has served two terms in office, hasn’t shown up for a vote since March 5, 2026, and has missed a staggering 50 roll call votes.
The other two Republicans who make up the New Jersey delegation, Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, stated they have called and sent texts to Kean due to concern for his health, however, neither has received a response from him. Van Drew went on to say contact with Kean has been total “radio silence.” Several members of the GOP from New York who worked closely with him on key issues have reported the same.
According to Politico, Kean’s absence has, strangely, not been given much media attention. Leaders in the GOP haven’t bothered to address the situation either, according to several Republicans. Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) stated that he hadn’t been aware that Kean wasn’t present until he tried to find him on the House floor in mid-April 2026.
“I was looking for him,” Bacon went on to say in a recent interview. “I didn’t know it was that long.” Harrison Neely, a consultant for Kean, spoke with Politico and said, “I know the congressman and his family appreciate all of the well wishes and support. Please know that he will be back on a regular full schedule very soon.”
Several of Kean’s closest allies also say he will be returning to work soon. “I don’t even know the truth myself or even enough to disclose any information,” Union County GOP Chair Carlos Santos said in comments made to Politico. “But I have been texting with him and was told he’ll be fine and make a full recovery in the next couple of weeks.”
Kean represents the 7th Congressional District of New Jersey, which is the most competitive House seat in the Garden State. It covers a large portion across the northern and central part of the state that includes Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. During the 2024 presidential election, President Donald Trump barely took the district, we’re talking a slim margin of one point.

The New Jersey Republican’s health struggles come as he faces his most intense congressional race yet. Adding to the challenge is the Trump administration’s opening of an immigration detention facility in the district, while also pulling funding for a major infrastructure project for commuters in the state. Both of these moves have seemingly placed his hold on the district in a delicate position.
However, those who support Kean say his absence won’t be much of a thought on the minds of voters when the election rolls around. “Everyone understands from their own family experiences that people run into unexpected health issues,” Republican National Committee member and Kean campaign attorney Bill Palatucci said.
“Voters will be completely sympathetic and it’s so early in the year that it will be long forgotten come the fall,” Palatucci continued. Democrats within the New Jersey delegation have taken note of Kean’s absence and have also stated concern over the congressman’s health. They say they also have not received word about his condition.
