Some people are entirely lacking in common sense. UFC fighter Dustin Poirier was part of an altercation at a Mardi Gras parade in Louisiana over the weekend of the 19th, which proved that statement true.
34-year-old Poirier and his wife, Jolie, were riding in the back of a Jeep at the parade when a UFC fan approached the vehicle holding a sign. The phrase, “Hey Dustin, your wife’s in my DM’s’” was written on the sign. Wow, that person made a mistake. Upon seeing the sign, Dustin Poirier reached out and slapped the foolish sign-holder, who appeared to be reaching out for a handshake for some odd reason. The video of the altercation is below:
What an absolute melon, Dustin should’ve slapped him harder pic.twitter.com/hDyCthu6F7

UFC star Conor McGregor first uttered the phrase in the aftermath of the duo’s final of three fights in the Octagon. After a poorly timed kick left McGregor unable to continue with a broken ankle, the fighter sat on the ground should that Poirier’s wife had been “In my DM’s.” DM is short for Direct Message, a communication method on social media. At the time, the comment understandably got under Poirier’s skin, as he later called McGregor a “dirtbag,” according to the Daily Star.
It’s one thing for an athlete in the heat of a competition to say something so reckless, but for someone to go to so much premeditated trouble as to create a sign to bring to this parade is genuinely baffling. This is the only possible outcome if you bring this sign to this parade. One of the most dangerous men in the world is now angered at you, specifically, Mr Sign Holder. You picked someone who is trained to fight people as the target of your bullying, all for internet fame.
To make matters even worse, as the Jeep drove away, the man held up the middle finger to taunt Poirier. At this point, Poirier had enough and was climbing out of the Jeep to finish the job he’d started, but his wife held him back. Jolie, the wife, probably saved the day for both men. She still managed to have a good time at the parade, as she posted this to Instagram following the party, according to the New York Post:
“Happy Mardi Gras Louisiana!!! Thank you Youngsville for all of the love & support! We had a great time celebrating with everyone and thank you Mayor Kenny Ritter for the invite! You definitely know how to throw a parade.”
A couple of other fighters chimed in to voice their support for Poirier, including Adrian Yanez and Jack “Tank” Shore:
“People are getting way too comfortable being disrespectful. Good s–t slapping him @DustinPoirier,” Tweeted Yanez.
“Don’t f–k around and you won’t find out. Clown this is real life not the internet,” Shore posted.
Hopefully, this will serve as a lesson to others who think it is wise to taunt professional fighters in public for social media gratification. However, if that crowd has yet to learn, there may be little hope.
