“You’re a Traitor”: Sitting Democratic Senator Accused of Treason after Cheering on Iran Against the American Navy

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) is drawing heavy fire from conservatives and other patriotic Americans after publishing a post on social media platform X seemingly cheering for Iran and a disputed report that more than two dozen Iranian vessels slipped through the U.S. blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Murphy shared a news report about the vessels, with his one-word commentary: “Awesome.”

The post Murphy shared is from the Lloyd’s List account, which is a shipping journal, claiming that a total of 26 vessels belonging to a so-called “shadow fleet” managed to elude the blockade. Murphy attempted to backpedal on his comment and save face by clarifying later that he was merely being sarcastic. “Ok Twitter, I can’t believe I need to clarify this but obviously Trump’s bungled mismanagement of this war is not ‘awesome,’” he posted on his X account.

“As I have said a million times here, it’s a disaster and he should end the war immediately. My tweet was something called ‘sarcasm,’” Murphy continued. The Connecticut Democrat continued to whine, “I just have to be more careful about sarcasm on Twitter.” Sean Parnell, chief Pentagon spokesperson, released a comment saying the Lloyd’s List report was “false” and ripped Murphy for his comment.

According to a report from the New York Post, there was at least one of Murphy’s Democratic colleagues, a staffer, who believed the comment was a step too far, telling the outlet, “Stupid sarcasm over life or death issues is beneath a senator.” The staffer added, “Was it sarcasm? Certainly. But when so many on the far-left have been openly cheering for the Iranian regime, and when Murphy has shown a willingness to play to the far-left when it suits him politically, Republicans can hardly be blamed for taking him at his word.”

“If a Republican had posted something like this in reverse, you bet your a** Dems would be hitting them for it,” the staffer correctly concluded. Murphy has been an ardent and outspoken critic of the war effort in Iran and has repeatedly slammed the U.S. over the conflict. He recently made a trip to Spain where he claimed the U.S. is facing “the most significant threat to American democracy since the Civil War.”

“We are not on the verge of a totalitarian takeover, we are in the middle of it,” he ranted, urging progressives the world over to “beat back the forces of fascism.” The Connecticut senator has several foreign policy-related assignments as part of his duty in the Senate, including positions on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security.

Rumors swirled during the 2024 presidential election that if former Vice President Kamala Harris had won, Murphy was a leading contender for secretary of state, due to his experience with foreign policy. However, his recent comments in support of Iran have drawn heavy criticism on social media, with many commenters reminding him of the brutality of the Islamic regime.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) put Murphy on blast for his comments, referring to him as an “embarrassment to the Senate” before accusing him of “rooting for enemy terrorists who target and kill Americans.” Scott then said, “He should be stripped of his assignment to the Foreign Relations Committee NOW!” The official Senate GOP X account also weighed in on the matter.

“Senate Democrats are expected to disagree with Republicans. But cheering for our enemy, especially for a regime that has killed so many American citizens, is beyond the pale. Democrats in Congress ought to condemn this disgusting remark,” it said. “‘Go Iran!’ exclaimed the United States Senator,” conservative pundit Stephen L. Miller responded.
