Mitch McConnell just gave a speech in the Senate about immigration in which he attempted to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration, declaring that immigration makes America strong but illegal immigration makes it weak. In his words:
“Orderly legal immigration is part of what makes America strong: Anarchy and open borders make us weak.”
Continuing, he went on to highlight the situation at the southern border as a way of making his point about the problems caused by illegal immigration, saying:
“[The southern inflow] is record-shattering. Two million apprehensions only count the subset of people that were actually caught. Experts estimate hundreds of thousands more people on top of that number who simply got away …
“There’s nothing compassionate or humane about the border crisis that Democrats’ mixed signals and failed policies have unleashed. It’s not fair to American citizens. It’s not fair to law enforcement. And it’s not fair to the people who’ve been encouraged to undertake desperate and dangerous journeys by years of Democrats signaling to the world that there are no real consequences for breaking our laws and cutting in line.”
However, despite focusing on illegal immigration and what most conservatives contend to be the point about it, which is that it makes our nation far weaker, McConnell never attempted to explain to his colleagues in the Senate or the American people how legal immigration makes us stronger.
Does importing tens of thousands of people from the various hellholes of the world, along with all their relatives thanks to chain migration, really make us stronger? Does importing millions more workers that saturate the labor market and keep wages low really make natural-born American citizens better off?
Many Republicans debate those questions, arriving at different answers rooted in cultural and economic points. But McConnell refused to address it in his speech.
However, though he refused to do that and take a stand against all immigration, legal or illegal, something that likely would have pleased the populist, MAGA voters, he did speak out on the recent outrage against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and noted the absurdity of the Democrats attacking DeSantis after busing illegals all around the country, saying:
According to one report from early 2021, the Biden administration was already filling Greyhound buses with people turning up at our border and dropping them into various destinations from the South to the Midwest to the Northeast. Ah, but it was never to Martha’s Vinyard.
So these well-to-do blue enclaves are finally witnessing the smallest fraction of the challenges that open borders have forced on working-class communities all across our country.
But other than that, McConnell largely dodged contentious issues and instead stuck to safer, less populist talking points. Speaking on inflation, for example, he said:
Now, on another matter. Washington Democrats’ runaway inflation has caused a nationwide crisis. It has put working families and small businesses in a bind from coast to coast. Since President Biden took office inflation has shot up a staggering 13.2 percent. For the average American household, this translates to hundreds and hundreds of extra dollars every month working overtime just barely — barely — tread water.
