New reports have revealed that an illegal immigrant charged with the brutal murder of Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman entered the United States during the Biden administration before being apprehended and subsequently set free in the country, according to information from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Details from DHS also mentioned that Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old from Venezuela, had a criminal record, including an arrest for shoplifting in Chicago. Medina-Medina is currently being held in quarantine due to having a potentially dangerous contagious illness, which some believe is tuberculosis, according to information released by sources within the Chicago Police Department.
Speaking with Fox News, a police source said that the shooting was an ambush. Medina-Medina wore some kind of mask or face covering to disguise his identity during the attack. He is believed to have been living in the Rogers Park area of the Windy City. Investigators found a gun they believe was connected to the shooting death of Gorman.
The report also revealed that the Chicago Police Department has officially charged Medina-Medina with murder, along with several other felony charges. The charges include one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault involving the discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.
In a statement from DHS over the weekend, it was revealed that Medina-Medina was first caught by the U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, however, under the leadership and policies of the Biden administration, he was let go into the country. A short time later, on June 19, 2023, he was busted for shoplifting and once again released, establishing a prior criminal record before the murder of Gorman.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also said they had put out an arrest detainer on Medina-Median and called on Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the leaders of sanctuary cities in the state not to release the suspect. “Jose Medina-Medina was previously arrested for shoplifting in Chicago,” the agency said.
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said about the tragic murder. “We are calling on Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal illegal alien from jail back into American neighborhoods.”

The agency also noted it had bigger concerns, namely that ICE had previously urged Illinois leadership to honor detainers for thousands of criminal illegal aliens that were taken into state custody. Gorman, a freshman from Westchester County, New York, was shot in the head by Medina-Medina, after he confronted her group of friends who were walking on the Chicago lakefront. He simply opened fire.
As Gorman tried to run away, the suspect shot her. The young woman was later pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Medina-Medina was busted for the crime after he was later identified by his unique limp. The investigation into the tragic shooting is still ongoing.
