Republicans Score Another Big Win as Red State Democrat Leader Resigns Ahead of Midterms

Oklahoma Rep. John Waldron resigned as Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party on December 8, 2025, citing personal reasons, upcoming legislative duties, and family commitments after just six months in the role.

He transferred leadership to Vice Chair Erin Brewer, who immediately assumed the position. Waldron retains his legislative seat. The party credited his tenure with revitalizing county operations, recruiting 100 candidates, and boosting visibility ahead of 2026. Brewer pledged to sustain the stricken party’s momentum.

In a post to Facebook, Rep. Waldron wrote, “It is with sincere consideration that I announce my resignation as Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party for personal reasons. With the legislative session session coming up and pressing family commitments, I am handing over the reins to my capable partners on the executive committee.”

Closing out the post, he stated, “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in revitalizing our party statewide over the past six months, and I’m confident that work will continue under Erin Brewer’s leadership.”

“We are thankful for your service and excellent leadership. You’ve had a heckuva year and will certainly be missed in this capacity, though I know all too well how the days are long and the years are short… good on you for focusing on what matters most. Godspeed, John,” a county-level party said in the comments.

In an official statement, the OK Democratic Party revealed, “This morning, Vice Chair Erin Brewer assumed the role of Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. Chair Brewer is hitting the ground running, continuing to bring to the table her strong track record of relentless organizing, policy expertise, and ability to mobilize both resources and voters.”

“The Oklahoma Democratic Party’s Executive Committee is exploring candidates for the role of Vice Chair, and will present a nominee to the next State Central Committee meeting in January, followed by a statement from the Oklahoma Democratic Party,” the same source added.

The party claimed, “We are confident that with the ongoing partnership of our elected officials, staff, local Democratic organizations, and State Central Committee, we will continue to make progress toward our goals of flipping seats in 2026. It is as important as ever that we remain singularly focused on our mission to engage, connect, and organize in order to elect more Democrats across Oklahoma.”

The Democrats added, “Representative John Waldron announced his resignation from his position as Chair. We are beyond grateful for his service to our state and party, particularly his commitment to building a strong slate of candidates for 2026.”

Party chair Erin Brewer asserted, “Over the last six months, Oklahoma Democrats have knocked thousands of doors, cheered as 100 candidates have stepped up to run for office, rebuilt our county party operations, earned the trust of donors large and small, and elevated our visibility and brand statewide.”

Building on this point, Brewer tried to paint the move in a positive light, stating, “We are ready to maintain and expand this momentum into 2026. I am beyond grateful to the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters.”
