Danise Baird, wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Baird (R-IN), died from complications of injuries sustained in a January 5, 2026, hit-and-run crash while the couple drove back to Washington, D.C. The pair had been married 59 years, and met as high school sweethearts who now have three children.

Rep. Baird, 80, was briefly hospitalized and released. Unfortunately, Danise suffered nearly 15 bone fractures and faced a long recovery before passing. The congressman’s office announced her death on X, describing her as the family foundation centered on faith, family, and service.

Announcing the tragic incident, Congressman Jim Baird’s office made a post to X which read, “Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service. A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

“The Office of Congressman Jim Baird is saddened to announce the passing of his beloved wife, Danise, following complications from injuries sustained in a car accident earlier this year,” the office confirmed in another post.

Before the tragic death, signs from the family seemed hopeful. Beau Baird, the congressman’s son, initially said his mother had “a long recovery ahead of her after suffering nearly 15 breaks and fractures” in the “serious hit-and-run accident.”

Later, he explained that his mother “has taken her first assisted steps,” adding that “while we’re hopeful, we know there’s still a road ahead, and family is at the center of all we do.” However, ultimately her condition began to decline, and Danise Baird succumbed to her injuries.

Responding on social media, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) stated, “This is incredibly sad news from our dedicated colleague Jim Baird. Jim’s wife Danise was often by his side as he worked so hard in Congress on behalf of his constituents. They are salt of the earth people and Jim and his family have sacrificed so much for our country.”

Likewise, Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) asked the public to “join me in lifting up my colleague Rep. Jim Baird and his family in prayer,” adding, “May God wrap them in His comfort through the difficult days ahead,” in a heartfelt message.

In a personal reaction, the Indiana Republican thanked the public for the flood of sympathy. “I want to thank everyone for the kind condolences and messages of support. The loss is profound, but your prayers and love have meant more than I can express,” he posted.

“After 59 years of marriage, Danise was my closest confidant and lifelong partner in every sense. She believed deeply in the responsibility of serving the Fourth District by my side and never wavered in her support of that calling,” Baird continued.

Concluding his comments, he added, “I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and that responsibility remains. While I continue to grieve, I will carry on the work she cared so much about, strengthened by the support of our family and an exceptional staff. My office remains open to serve and support constituents.”
