Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation served a series of search warrants on February 25, 2026, at the Los Angeles Unified School District’s headquarters and the superintendent’s home. Officials in the City of Angels served the warrants as part of an ongoing investigation, according to an individual close to the probe who chatted about the situation with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Sources also revealed that the FBI raided a home in Florida that is connected to Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. Before serving at LAUSD, Carvalho was the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, starting in 2008. He took the position with LAUSD in 2022. Images captured of the raid on Carvalho’s home show FBI agents at 9 a.m. on the front porch. However, Carvalho’s neighbor said that agents were outside the home beginning at 6 a.m.

As of now, the exact reason for the raid is not known. As of February 25, the affidavit remained sealed, according to officials with the FBI. An individual with connections to the case revealed that the investigation goes back before the current administration and is a probe into allegations that Carvalho might have received kickbacks from a business while serving as the superintendent of the Miami school district.

According to CBS News, the source also stated that the investigation does not have a direct connection to LAUSD or the work Carvalho has done at the district, clarifying that there is no known connection to the LAUSD with any wrongdoing. The school district released a statement confirming that “law enforcement activity” took place at its headquarters located in downtown Los Angeles.

“The District is cooperating with the investigation and we do not have further information at this time,” the statement went on to say. A few of the district’s employees spoke with local media outlets, revealing that they were told they needed to leave the building due to law enforcement activity. The employees also revealed that they were not provided any details about the situation.

The office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was asked to comment on the incident, replying, “LAUSD is an independent body not governed by the City of Los Angeles. The Mayor’s Office has no information about this.” Carvalho was supposed to appear as a guest on CBS LA Mornings on February 26, but that appearance was canceled shortly after the raid on his residence.

Carvalho spent the first part of his time with LAUSD working through the COVID-19 pandemic, however, his focus changed in recent months to concerns over immigration enforcement operations. According to CBS News, LAUSD is the second-largest school district in student enrollment in the country. Another report from LAist revealed more information concerning Carvalho’s background.

Prior to moving to Los Angeles, the LAUSD superintendent served in the Miami-Dade County School District for over three decades, first as a teacher, then the last 14 years as the district’s supervisor. Carvalho, along with the district’s elected board has been open about their support for illegal immigrant students, staff members, and families in the community ever since President Donald Trump was elected to a second term in the White House.
