Starting off the week with a spicy Twitter post, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for a split up of the union on Twitter, saying:
We need a national divorce.
We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.
Everyone I talk to says this.
From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done.
We need a national divorce.
We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.

While the spicy tweet drew some negative comments, a shockingly large number of commenters agreed with Rep. MTG on that point.
The Libertarian Party Mises Caucus, for example, said: “💯 Whatever our other disagreements, this is an absolute truth. I would only add that various states will need subdivided as well.”
Another commenter claimed that the blue states would collapse under the weight of their own socialist, pro-welfare policies if a national divorce happened, saying “Blue states would collapse under the weight of their self-entitlement attitudes, hatefulness toward others, and laziness. They would have no workers to take care of them, and since they themselves hate working, everyone would eventually suffer and die.”
Even some on the left joined in and accepted the idea, with one of the bigger leftist Twitter accounts saying “Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.”

Still, some disagreed. One account, for example, said “You should resign from the Congress of THE UNITED STATES if you feel this way. How did such an immature person like you ever get elected?”
In any case, MTG isn’t the only one calling for a new relationship between red and blue states. Leftist political commentator Keith Olbermann, for example, recently called for an “economic civil war” between red and blue states, saying:
This isn’t the first time that MTG has called for a national divorce. She did so in December of 2021 as well, saying, in response to a user calling for a tax on people that move to red states from blue ones, “All possible in a National Divorce scenario. after Democrat voters and big donors ruin a state like California, you would think it wise to stop them from doing it to another great state like Florida. Brainwashed people that move from CA and NY really need a cooling off period.”
Further, the New York Post reported at the time that “In October, Greene conducted a Twitter survey to gauge people’s interest in a “national divorce” between Republican- and Democratic-leaning states. The unscientific poll found 48 percent of people wanted the US to stay together, while 43 percent called for a political division and 9 percent were undecided. Greene celebrated those who voted to divide the country.”
