The 22-year-old daughter of Minnesota GOP gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband on February 7, 2026, in what police have determined was a botched murder-suicide. Law enforcement officers from the St. Cloud Police Department arrived at the couple’s residence around 8:20 p.m. on Saturday to attend to a “medical emergency.”
When they arrived, officers found the woman, later identified as Hallie Marie Tobler, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, was found at the scene with self-inflicted stab wounds. Hallie Tobler was then taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Dylan was transported to St. Cloud Hospital and, at the time of this writing, is in “stable condition,” according to police. When he is released from the hospital, he will be transferred to the Stearns County Jail where he will face charges related to homicide.
“There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family,” the Minnesota Republican Party went on to say in a statement. “The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy.” On February 10, 2026, Johnson’s campaign page was taken down.
According to Fox News, the Minnesota Republican Party revealed that Johnson has decided to suspend his campaign out of “respect for his family and the enormity of this loss.” Hallie and Dylan Tobler were engaged to be married in 2021 after a dating relationship of five years, according to a Facebook published by Johnson’s wife. Later that year, the couple was married.
The tragic incident comes as immigration operations in the state of Minnesota, along with protests against these efforts, have been making daily headlines. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 vice presidential running mate, decided to drop his re-election bid after explosive revelations about massive fraud involving the Somali community in the state were uncovered.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who is also running for the governor’s seat, released a statement on X about the tragedy, saying, “My condolences to Jeff Johnson and his entire family for the loss of their daughter on Saturday night. John and I are praying for all those who loved her during this unimaginably difficult time.” This isn’t the first time Hallie Tobler was a victim of domestic violence.
The 22-year-old woman told police that her husband attacked her on June 19, 2025, according to the New York Post. Tobler spoke with local law enforcement officers conducting a welfare check that Dylan choked her while he was “having delusions,” going on to tell them that her husband had a “history of aggressive behavior.”

Tobler then revealed that Dylan suffered from psychosis, which is a term used by mental health professionals to describe symptoms a person experiences while having difficulties discerning between fantasy and reality. During the assault, Tobler stated that her husband made “vague suicide threats about not having to be here anymore.”
She then claimed that Dylan yelled and “wasn’t making any sense.” He also destroyed a picture frame and tore the photo inside to shreds. Dylan pleaded guilty at the time and was convicted of disorderly conduct, which is a petty misdemeanor in Minnesota. He was then ordered to pay a $150 fine on Jan. 28, 2026.
