Mother of “Today” Show Co-Anchor Goes Missing Under Troubling Circumstances

Arizona law enforcement authorities revealed on February 2, 2026 that the disappearance of “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother is being investigated as a “crime.” Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on Saturday evening at her home located just outside Tucson, according to a missing persons flyer. Her family reported her missing at noon the following day, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated.

“We do in fact have a crime scene. We do in fact have a crime,” Nanos went on to say during a news conference Monday, adding, “She did not leave on her own. We know that.” Nanos did not provide any further details concerning the investigation, but noted that local police were examining video evidence from cameras posted at Guthrie’s home. Guthrie lives alone and hires staff to help care for her and her residence.

The sheriff then urged the elderly woman’s neighbors to “go through their Ring cameras” to see if they might have inadvertently recorded evidence that might help solve Guthrie’s disappearance. Search and rescue personnel who searched the local area over the weekend have now been sent home, saying that “right now, we don’t see this as a search mission as much as we do a crime scene.”

According to NBC News, the sheriff stated that Guthrie is on daily medication and needs to take it for her survival. Not having access to her medication could prove to be fatal, he said. Nanos then clarified that Guthrie’s disappearance was not connected to dementia, describing her mental acuity as “sharp as a tack.” Authorities revealed they were not aware of any threats having been made against the woman’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, who is now in Arizona.

Nanos also said the FBI has been notified about the case and stated that U.S. Customs and Border Protection are also providing assistance with the investigation. The sheriff asked the public to contact authorities if they have any information about Guthrie’s disappearance. “I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said.

The Monday morning broadcast of the “TODAY” show opened by giving an update on Nancy Guthrie, with co-anchor Craig Melvin saying it is a “deeply personal story for us.” In a statement that was shown on air, Savannah Guthrie said, “I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.” “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” Guthrie continued in the statement. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at: 520-351-4900.”

In a previous statement, the Guthrie family confirmed the legitimacy of the case and revealed they were “working closely with local law enforcement.” Nancy Guthrie is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing around 150 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes. Family members say they last saw her at her residence around 9:00 pm to 9:45 pm on Saturday.

“Miss Guthrie is 84 years old and is not in good physical health,” the sheriff said during the news conference. He pointed out that her family said that she had no cognitive issues. Volunteers, along with drones, a plane, a helicopter, and rescue dogs have searched the area around Guthrie’s home. Her daughter has discussed their close relationship many times over the years she has worked on “TODAY.”
