In a major victory for the MAGA movement and First Lady Melania Trump, MELANIA, a documentary covering the first lady’s return to office, has massively overperformed in its opening weekend, especially in rural and Trump-supporting areas.

For context, the patriotic film is projected to gross around $8 million domestically in its opening weekend, which is third for the weekend, marking the best start for a non-concert documentary in over a decade, surpassing prestige films like After Death, which scored $5 million.

MELANIA was released on about 1,500–1,778 screens, and it outperformed several 2025 feature films in opening weekend grosses or per-screen efficiency, including movies starring Jennifer Lawrence, a major Stephen King adaptation, a Coen brothers project, and  Dwayne Johnson films, despite facing intense negative media coverage.

Summarizing the data, one user posted, “Melania Trump shares her new film, ‘MELANIA’ has the biggest documentary opening in a decade and received an A Cinemascore from audiences.” This post noted the documentary’s major successes.

The film was described as Amazon MGM Studios’ film MELANIA offers unprecedented access to the 20 days leading up to the 2025 Presidential Inauguration — through the eyes of the First Lady herself,” on the official webpage.

Step inside Melania Trump’s world as she orchestrates inauguration plans, navigates the complexities of the White House transition, and moves her family back to the Nation’s Capital. With exclusive footage capturing critical meetings, private conversations, and never-before-seen environments, MELANIA showcases Mrs. Trump’s return to one of the world’s most powerful roles,” the same source noted.

However, despite the positive signs, some users reported censorship from social media. “So I tried to rate the movie Melania today on rotten tomatoes, but they would not permit me to write at five stars. They sent me to a different site. I tried 17 times and they would not permit me to rate Melania’s movie. Five stars fandango is a piece of s**t,” one woman wrote.

Taking to social media to lend his support to the film, the president posted, “Last night I saw, “MELANIA,” for the second time. The audience loved it, and so do I. Check it out — A MUST SEE!” In the comments under this message, conservatives gave their own reactions.

“A graceful First Lady who seeks to do her job with no fanfare day to day. She deserves a movie,” one woman said. “I haven’t seen it yet, but I can’t wait. She’s a very beautiful woman and you’re a very lucky man to have her. I think everyone will agree with that,” another suggested.

Likewise, one commentator stated, “I watched parts of Melania’s documentary and really loved the use of MJ’s ‘Billie Jean’ on her way to Manhattan. Great music choice. I’ll watch it all soon.” Agreeing another stated, “Just got back from it! The best part was when she was singing Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean in the car! 🎤😎”

“Both you, President Trump, and First Lady Melania make Americans proud. God bless you for serving our country,” one woman gushed. “Very authentic caption mr president, YOU really gave your best to make this real and authentic. youre the best,” the last comment noted.
