In a viral video clip making its way across social media, comedian Shane Gillis describes a time during a family Thanksgiving where his aunt showed up to the event ready to throw down with the rest of the MAGA-supporting clan. Following the meal, where copious amounts of alcohol were consumed by Gillis’s liberal aunt, the comedian began to argue with her over politics. However, partway through the argument with her, Gillis switches to his nearly flawless imitation of President Donald Trump, leaving her completely flustered and ready to explode.
During the video, Shane recounts how much he enjoys getting into political fights with the more liberal side of the family, saying, “I love some political fighting at Thanksgiving.” Shane’s father, Phil, chimes in and says, “Well, we got the participants,” to which Shane responds, “I’m down to do it.” Phil says the family has a fairly solid mix of political opinions on both sides of the spectrum.
Shane then points out that part of the fun of the arguments is that everyone gets loosened up by hammering back more than a few drinks. “But everyone drinks. So everyone really gets out of pocket at night.” He then recalls the time during the holiday season where he got into an argument with his uncle and aunt, who is his married to his father’s brother.
“I had a nice battle with my uncle and my aunt one year. It was wonderful,” the former Saturday Night Live star said. His father then unfolded the story of what went down at the now infamous Thanksgiving dinner, saying, “What happened is, she [Joan] and Shane are going after each other on the political stuff, you know. This is like after three or four hours of drinking. And this is three or four hours after the Thanksgiving meal.”
“Shane is arguing with her, talking, and all of a sudden he starts talking like Trump,” Phil continued. For those unfamiliar with Shane’s comedic work, one of the bits he’s become most famous for is his voice impression of President Trump, and as many have pointed out, it’s eerily accurate. Phil then notes how the switch-up from Shane to the Trump impression confounds Joan .
“And she’s like a dog. Like she turns her head, like she’s trying to understand. Like, ‘is this really Trump talking?’ Like she’s all screwed up. It was hilarious,” Phil said. “Yeah, it’s fun to argue with her as Trump while she was hammered, she was hammered on wine,” Shane said, picking up where his dad left off in the recounting of the legendary family dinner.
He then shares his aunt’s reaction to the impression, drawing attention to how flabbergasted she was at being confronted with a dead-on impression of the president. “She was like ‘ohhh,’ ‘ahhhh.’ ‘Shut up.'” Shane said he’s fully planning to use the Trump voice to trigger his Aunt Joan again at the next family Thanksgiving by slipping in a little “quiet piggy,” a phrase President Trump is alleged to have used when speaking with a reporter he wasn’t too fond of, though many have stated that he actually said something else and was misheard. Shane said he plans to use the phrase at the table while the family is eating, just to get a rise out of his liberal aunt.
