Juan Alvarado Aguilar, 37, is facing significant felony charges, including two counts of felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired, after allegedly driving drunk, crossing the centerline, and causing a head-on crash late on January 16, 2026, in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Tragically, the victims, 20-year-old Catawba College soccer player Fletcher Mark Daniel Harris and his 19-year-old girlfriend Skylar Nichole Provenza, died at the scene. Aguilar, held on over a $5 million bond, has an ICE detainer as an illegal immigrant. Reacting to the situation, Catawba College mourned Harris as a beloved student-athlete, and community tributes highlighted the couple’s kindness.

“Our hearts are broken,” said Alex Morais, the head men’s soccer coach at Catawba College, “Fletcher was profoundly loved and will be missed by everyone in our program and community.” Following his lead, many other school officials offered their condolences.

Michelle Caddigan, the Catawba College vice president for athletics, added, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Fletcher Harris. This is an unimaginable loss for our campus community. Fletcher was an exceptional student and dedicated athlete whose impact extended far beyond the soccer field.”

Similarly, a family member referred to Harris as “one of the best human beings” and a “beautiful soul,” and said that the couple had “the best hearts.” Offering another condolence, the Hickory FC co-founder and managing director memorialized the fallen player. He said that Harris was noted for his signature ability to show off “how to be good teammates,” and “how to make a positive impact.” The same source vowed that “his legacy would live on,” in the club’s culture going forward

Offering another view of the situation, a prominent black conservative reacted, “🚨: BREAKING: Illegal immigrant Juan Alvarado Aguilar, 37 (Mexican passport, ICE detainer), allegedly drunk, crossed centerline, killed couple Fletcher Harris, 20, and Skylar Provenza, 19, in head-on crash Friday.”

Calling for accountability, one comment noted, “his is so tragic. There was another post I just saw also. Where is MADD & why don’t we even hear from them. The mothers have to take action when politicians won’t.” “As American citizens, we need to constantly and urgently continue to plaster all illegal immigrants harming American citizens, to which the crazy looney left are going out if their way to defend and keep in our country!!!” another noted.

Enraged by the situation, one comment added, “Such a senseless tragedy that never should have happened and these are the people these deranged animals are out there rioting for! This is how they alter statistics. Seeing so many examples of this from so many states! Needs to change now! Enough is enough.”

A popular Facebook post noted, “Two young lives gone. Two families shattered. A college community in mourning.đź’” Please keep Fletcher’s family, Skylar’s family, and the Catawba College community in your prayers…This didn’t have to happen.”
