Recently, a woman and her 5-year-old son fell 90 feet from the famous New York waterfall, Niagara Falls. Sadly, the mother died, but her young son miraculously survived the fall. However, authorities are claiming the incident does not appear to be an accident.
The two individuals were visiting the state park from out-of-town on Monday. Police officers received a call around noon with reports of a woman and a child who had fallen into the falls near the Cave of the Winds elevator. New York State Parks Police Captain Chris Rola described more of the scene in the video below.
Captain Chris Rola stated, “At approximately 12:30 in the afternoon, New York State Park police dispatch received a call get multiple calls of an adult female child that had fallen into the gorge in the area that gave her the wings complex. Park Police Officers responded. They’re able to go down the Cave of the winds elevator.”
“Niagara Falls fire also was called they assisted went down with us they were able to reverse the bottom of the gorge up the ice to where the two individuals had fallen into the gorge. life saving measures were administered to both the female and the child. Fortunately, they were able to get to the child. He was stable enough that they were able to carry him out. Bring him up the elevator to a waiting ambulance. He was then transported over to the parking lot to where he was transported by Mercy Flight. So Shai Children’s Hospital. Unfortunately, the female is did not make it and she was recovered by the New York State Police aviation unit and is being taken by the Niagara County. Did she fall or jump? The investigation is still ongoing at this time but we don’t believe it was an accident,” Rola continued.

As of Tuesday, the boy was in critical condition after undergoing surgery. A spokesperson for the National Park Service did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for updated information. The woman’s husband was present at the park but was unharmed, Rola added. Rescuers traversed over “300 feet of dangerous icy terrain” while trying to get to the victims, the New York State Park Police said Tuesday.
According to reports from ABC 7:
The 34-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, climbed over a railing at the park with her son in tow about 12:30 p.m., police said. The pair plummeted to the bottom, hitting the frozen banks of the Niagara Falls gorge, police said. Emergency responders attempted to rescue both the woman and the boy, but they were unable to save the woman’s life, police said. The boy was airlifted to John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, NewYork, where he underwent surgery and remains in critical condition, police said.
