Harris County Treasurer Carla Wyatt, a Democrat elected in 2022, was arrested on December 27, 2025, and charged with misdemeanor burglary of a vehicle for allegedly breaking into another’s car with intent to commit theft.
She was booked into jail on Saturday, released on bond on Sunday, and is scheduled to appear in court soon. Wyatt did not respond to requests for comment. This follows a 2023 DWI arrest, with bond violations, that was dismissed in August 2025 after completing a pretrial diversion program.
Responding to the bombshell allegations, the DA’s office released an official statement to the media. “We are aware that Carla Wyatt was arrested and charged with burglary of a motor vehicle. As this case is pending, our office will not comment further on the details of the investigation,” the document read.
Continuing to address the case, the same source said, “What we can say is this: the pursuit of justice in Harris County is guided by the law and evidence, not by political affiliation, public office, or party ties. No one is above the law. No one is exempt from accountability. Our responsibility is, and always will be, to the people in this community.”
Ironically, before her run-in with the law, Wyatt appeared on a local news station shortly after being elected treasurer.“My view of success in this particular role is to be a role model for those people who are coming behind me,” Wyatt, who is the first African American to be elected in this role, said at the time.
When the story broke on social media, conservatives were enraged. “BREAKING: Harris County, Texas Treasurer Carla Wyatt (D) arrested for allegedly breaking into a car. She also has a DWI from 2023 and was charged with violating conditions of her bond in 2024. She was celebrated as the first black treasurer for Harris County and is up for reelection in 2026,” Libs of TikTok posted.
Reacting to the last post, the Hariss County GOP noted, “The Democrat Harris County Treasurer has been charged with breaking into a car. This is not her first encounter with law enforcement while in office. And the Democrat County Attorney has enabled her actions. The person responsible for protecting taxpayer money is now accused of stealing.”

In the comments under this tweet, everyday Americans expressed their anger. “Another disgraceful Democrat politician. Why are they all like this?” one popular post asked. Similarly annoyed, one woman asked, “What are we doing here, Harris County? We are one of the few counties in a deficit. Property values were appraised at their highest levels and taxes were increased. @LinaHidalgoTX has been horrific, funneling money to immigrant housing & causes we don’t support.”
Slamming the entitled democrat, another added, “Harris county is the armpit of Texas….. It’s infested with democrats almost as bad as Austin if not worse. Democrat leadership for decades and the city is not safe. Harris county has terrible crime and is the biggest county in Texas.”
Drawing attention to the scandal, one user reacted, “An elected official being arrested is serious, full stop. This doesn’t need identity framing or partisan spin. It needs the same thing we expect in every case: due process, transparency, and consequences if the allegations are proven. Equal standards are what restore trust, not selective outrage.”
Continuing the focus on lax law enforcement, a conservative noted, “Ohh Harris county. Home of the $100 bond. These four are responsible for EVERY drunk driving death after how many they just let go. No repercussions. I wonder how much they get from the breathalyzer companies and such 🤔”
