In an epic and clever press release that was promulgated on Friday, December 19, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed the latest round of arrests it has made in its efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, framing this round of arrests as being a Christmas gift to Americans who want to see their country freed from the burden of illegal alien-committed crime.
As background, ICE, along with DHS generally, has moved to focusing on and highlighting more of its efforts to target illegal aliens with criminal backgrounds that include more crimes than crossing the border illegally, as that tends to do better in terms of polling with the public than mass raids on illegal aliens do.
Such is what DHS did in its December 19 press release on the matter, highlighting a number of the recent arrests it has made of illegal aliens who have horrific criminal backgrounds and records. Framing that as being a Christmas gift to the American people, DHS said, “This holiday season, ICE is working around the clock to ensure silent nights and safer streets.”
The press release then noted the general nature of the crackdown and arrests, noting that those who were caught by DHS were the “worst of the worst.” It said, “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of more worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from across the country convicted for vicious crimes including burglary, bank robbery, and aggravated kidnapping.”
Beginning its highlighting of some of those who have been arrested so far, DHS described a criminal illegal involved in a transnational gang, saying, “Jessupe Sandino Berraza-Rivera, a criminal illegal alien from Chile and a member of the transnational organized crime enterprise the South American Theft Group, convicted for burglary in Santa Ana, California.”
Continuing, the statement described another such illegal alien with an awful background, noting that he had a bevy of convictions to his name. It said, “Luis Enrique Castaneda-Reyes, a criminal illegal alien from Colombia, with TEN criminal convictions including bank robbery by force and violent crimes involving drugs and a machine gun in the U.S. District Court for New Jersey.”
Further, it described one who has been arrested how has a kidnapping charge on his record, among others, saying, “Elidelfo Castro-Nava, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, convicted for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury in the 3rd degree in Salt Lake County, Utah.”

Describing two others in somewhat less detail, the DHS said, “Juan Emerson Gomez-Sorto, a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador, convicted for aggravated assault in Price, Utah”, and “Jesser Sandoval-Cruz, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras, convicted for assault of a family household member after a previous conviction in Harris County, Texas.”
In a statement on the matter included as part of the press release, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, “Violent criminal illegal aliens who break our laws have absolutely no business remaining in the United States.”
Continuing, McLaughlin framed the arrests as being a Christmas gift to Americans, saying, “Yesterday’s arrests include criminal illegal aliens convicted for burglary, bank robbery, and kidnapping. We are thankful for our law enforcement who delivered the best Christmas gift for American families this holiday season: safer communities.”
