On December 17, 2025, during U.S. Border Patrol operations in Evanston, IL, targeting violent illegal immigrants, Mayor Daniel Biss confronted Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino. Totally embarrassing himself, Biss expressed unawareness of immigrant violence and complained about the federal agents’ tactics as abusive and racist.
Fighting back, Bovino noted that Biss’s ignorance was the issue and defended the raids as necessary for community safety. The heated exchange, captured on video, went viral, and the men continued to clash in a series of interactions on X.
Responding to a wave of violence committed by illegal immigrants, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss claimed, in the angry confrontation with Bovino, “I’m unaware of that happening.” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino responded with a witty retort. “Well, that’s probably the problem,” he fired back.
Continuing the tense interaction, Mayor Biss qualified his statements. “The violence is unacceptable,” he choked out, obviously somewhat intimidated. Firing back, Bovino said, “Yeah, that’s why we’re here. That’s why we are in your community to hear what you need us to do when we are dealing with a violent situation or something like this where there should be no violence committed by those who shouldn’t be here in your community…That’s why we’re here because you’re not doing anything about it.”
Reacting to the incident on social media, Bovino was graceful. “I would like to thank both Chicago and Evanston Police Departments who provided assistance in preventing violent mobs from assaulting our law enforcement officers as we were conducting Title 8 immigration duties in the area. Both departments cleared the way for us to continue our enforcement efforts unimpeded,” he posted.
Humerously summarizing the events, he stated, “I also had the opportunity to engage with the Evanston Mayor, who asked me why I was in Evanston? I told the mayor that we were there to make his city a safer place through Title 8 Immigration enforcement and how these enforcement operations work,”
Continuing his comments, the official noted, “Although he fell back into the divisive talking points that we’ve heard ad nauseam from politicians in Chicago, I hope it was enlightening to him. I always enjoy meeting and talking with such officials and today was no exception!!! Perhaps the mayor will see the light as we continue to remove bad people from Evanston. Excellent day in Evanston!”

Clearly seething, Biss quoted these comments with a bitter tirade. “The only “violent mob” in Evanston today was Greg Bovino and his masked thugs, terrorizing innocent people and then lying about our city to try and sow chaos,” he complained.
Doubling down, he repeated tired, woke talking points. “Evanston is safe in spite of ICE/CBP, not because of it. But I am so proud of our people who showed up and chased you out of town. Don’t come back,” the mayor raved.
Posting a clip of the original interaction, one conservative said, “Evanston Mayor @DanielBiss
admits on camera he has no clue about the violent crimes committed by illegals in his own city.” Replying, Bovino commented, “Kim, he was indeed clueless. We had round two 45 minutes later at a different spot. He didn’t fare well on that one either.”
