Twin Peaks is like a store-brand Hooters, but around midnight the other day, a Twin Peaks in San Antonio was transformed into a mini OK Corral. At that San Antonio Twin Peaks, a patron pulled a taser and fired it at a police officer, with the cop responding by shooting him in the chest. KENS5, reporting on what happened, said:
The officer was escorting the man out of the restaurant when he began to resist, grabbing the officer’s taser and using it on him, according to police.
The officer shot back at him hitting him one time in the chest. The suspect was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
The off-duty officer was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
No other details were provided and no other injuries were reported.
Apparently, what sparked the incident was that the man was causing some sort of disturbance inside the restaurant and had been asked to leave by the restaurant staff. When he refused to voluntarily do so, the off-duty Somerset Police officer working as a security guard for the restaurant began to forcibly remove the unruly patron at the request of the restaurant’s management.
It was during that forcible removal that the man apparently got angry with the off-duty officer escorting him off of the premises (a good bit of alcohol was involved and one can imagine that it raised temperatures significantly) and snatched the officer’s taser. It was then that he fired it at the officer and got shot in the chest. My San Antonio, a news site, reported on that aspect of the incident, saying:
According to the SAPD, an off-duty 29-year-old police officer from Somerset was working security at Twin Peaks Saturday night before a disturbance at the restaurant forced the officer to remove a man and his friends from the venue for being too intoxicated and belligerent. According to officials, the man got angry with the off-duty officer while being moved to the parking lot. The man took the officer’s taser before sprinting away. And after a short pursuit, pointed the taser at the officer before tasing him with it. The off-duty officer was then able to grab his own gun on hand and return fire, striking the man in the chest.
The incident is being investigated by the police. My San Antonio went on to note that “Night CID were also notified of the incident and began their investigation while the CSI processed the scene. According to the SAPD, the SAPD Shooting Team will lead the investigation.”
As the saying goes, “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”. It sure looks like a stupid prize was won by the unruly patron here, as a gunshot wound to the chest was almost certainly not worth whatever was causing him to resist leaving the Twin Peaks restaurant or got him angry with the off-duty police officer…but now he’ll have to deal with the wound, the costs of the wound, and the likely assault charge from firing the taser at the cop.
