The popular Christian TV show, “The Chosen”, was recently given a theatrical extension as fans of the series are flocking to theaters in massive numbers to view the season three finale.
The ticketing site promoting the series, Fathom Events, recently announced that audiences could see the show through February 6th wherever it is being shown nationwide, as reported by the Daily Wire. Previously, it was only to be shown on February 2nd and 3rd.
“Because of the success of the Christmas special last year, theaters are saying, ‘We want The Chosen in our theater,’” Director Dallas Jenkins said about his decision to release more episodes to theaters. “They’re saying, ‘Please release as many episodes as you can in theaters.’”
It is also reported that the season finale will include a depiction of the famous biblical event of Jesus feeding 5,000 people. “That was, by far, the biggest thing we’ve ever done,” said Jenkins.
Demand is so high for this show that fans broke the ticketing site since so many people wanted tickets before they sold out.
“Episodes 7&8 of Season Three are so big they demand to be on the big screen. And apparently, you demand it, too,” the crew wrote on the series’ Facebook page. “Unfortunately, the demand for tickets for The Chosen season finale crashed the Fathom Events website. It is now working again, so you can get tickets for Eps 7/8 at Fathom or your usual ticketing sites.”
“However: Our plans for the streaming release will NOT be delayed by the theatrical. Episode 7 livestream will be Sunday, Feb 5 and Episode 8 livestream will be TUESDAY, Feb 7,” the message continued. “More to come!”
The Daily Wire reported on the success of the series:
The director of the series said there were several factors that lead to the decision to release the finale in theaters and one was because the scope of the story demands it, the outlet noted.
“Because of the success of the Christmas special last year, theaters are saying, ‘We want The Chosen in our theater,’” Jenkins shared. “… They’re saying, ‘Please release as many episodes as you can in theaters.’”
And as previously noted, the finale will include what the creator of the series has called “by far, the biggest thing we’ve ever done” regarding the filming for the Feeding of the 5,000.
The first two episodes of Season 3 premiered on the big screen with fans turning out, making it No. 3 at the box office opening weekend. It was later released for free to fans to watch on the show’s app and stream with a message about paying it forward, as previously reported.
The DC Enquirer commented:
The success of “The Chosen” shows just how much well-made Bible-based content can do in the modern era. Hollywood has routinely ignored Christian films and tv shows to their own detriment and perhaps they should take another look as Americans yearn for content that showcases Christian values and stories.
It is refreshing to see such demand for Christian media when all to often we see negative messages in the entertainment industry.
