GOP Moves to Yank Federal Funding from Woke Cities that Cancelled Columbus Day

Putting the left on the back foot, Rep. Michael Rulli (R-OH) has filed a proposal to withhold funding from U.S. jurisdictions celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day. Supporting this move, Rulli emphasizes that Columbus Day honors Italian American heritage, rooted in cultural traditions and historical significance, including its establishment in 1892 following the lynching of Italian Americans.

A new House GOP proposal, led by Rep. Michael Rulli, seeks to establish a separate day to honor Native Americans, but he opposes replacing Columbus Day. Additionally, this bill would make Columbus Day a federal holiday.

Explaining his reasoning for this bill, the courageous conservative said, “This is about every son and daughter of Italy, every Knights of Columbus, every pasta dinner on Sunday, and every communion — everything that makes our culture who we are, from Philadelphia to San Francisco.”

Still not done, he listed out the places where this decision would be celebrated. “Every Little Italy neighborhood of this country celebrates Christopher Columbus. It’s so much more than the man. It’s the people,” Rulli noted.

Additionally, the Ohio Republican explained how this decision mattered to political issues much bigger than one holiday, saying, “We are not going to allow any American municipality to think that they have power over the federal government.”

Additionally, he fired shots at the Biden administration for replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. “I mean, the Native Americans are some of the most amazing, dynamic cultural people that make up the fabric of America. But they need their own special day,” Rep. Michael Rulli stated.

Adding more context, the principled conservative admitted, “And I would be willing to do that. I’m saying right now, I would be willing to get the indigenous people their own day, but not this day. I don’t care what party you’re in … if you come from Italian American descent, you love what President Trump did. It was a wonderful olive branch to all Italian Americans.”

Concluding his comments, he made it clear that he meant no offense, saying, “By no means, no way, shape or form, is this bill meant to offend any of the indigenous people. They deserve their own day. We will get them their own day, but not Columbus Day.”

In an official proclamation, the White House made it clear that Columbus Day was being celebrated as a way to “celebrate his legacy, we also acknowledge the contributions of the countless Italian-Americans who, like him, have endlessly contributed to our culture and our way of life. To this day, the United States and Italy share a special bond rooted in the timeless values of faith, family, and freedom.”

Despite these loft contributions, Trump explained how the left had successfully weaponized this holiday. He said, “Outrageously, in recent years, Christopher Columbus has been a prime target of a vicious and merciless campaign to erase our history, slander our heroes, and attack our heritage. Before our very eyes, left-wing radicals toppled his statues, vandalized his monuments, tarnished his character, and sought to exile him from our public spaces.”

Making his decision known, Trump stated, “Under my leadership, those days are finally over — and our Nation will now abide by a simple truth: Christopher Columbus was a true American hero, and every citizen is eternally indebted to his relentless determination.”
